Vocab Due tomorrow !!!!! Don’t forget to have it done when you come to class.

Independent novels – bring tomorrow Read any book you haven’t read before. Teachers keep track of this. We will read every Friday – you must have your book when you enter class Need to read 600 pages by the end of the trimester It is 10% of your grade After you finish your book, you need to do a book talk or book project in order to prove you’ve actually read it and to get credit for the pages. Book talks are due the Friday before exam week. Go to media center on your own time!

Writer’s notebooks √ Glue picture on front √ Glue quotes inside What do the quotes mean to you? (share out) Artifacts Turn and talk – use questions on next slide as inspiration if needed (you will need to talk for at least 4 minutes, so delve deep into what this item means to you and why.) Pay close attention as your partner talks about his/her item

Questions to Get Started and Keep Going  How did you get the artifact?  What was the occasion?  Is there a story behind it?  Why do you keep it?  What does it represent to you now, years later?  What would your mother, father, or friend say about this item?  What does this artifact make you think about?  What does it make you feel?

Now, write… Free write to explore the item that is important to you. Make it your goal to write at least a full page on it. Writ about it in any way that seems important to you. Capture stories, descriptions, thoughts or feelings. You will be sharing a particularly good or compelling part of your free write with your partner. Now, we’re going to use what you wrote and said to make an artifact poem of at least 15 lines.

My artifact This fleur de lys is something I bought over 30 years ago when I was living and studying in France. I’m not sure if it was originally a key chain or a Christmas ornament – I can’t remember. I do remember that I bought it when we were travelling around during the Christmas holiday. I’ve moved a dozen times since then, but I always have kept this in a place where I can find it immediately. For a while, it hung in my room from a thumbtack on the wall. Then, once I started teaching, I always made sure it was part of my classroom. It seems sort of like a good luck charm. I think I’ve hung onto it for so long because it reminds me of one of my favorite times of my life. I was young, pretty carefree and in a place I loved. When I was living in France, it was hard, don’t get me wrong. I remember being exhausted most evenings from thinking too much. I loved the family I lived with, but there were really lonely times when I missed my home in Michigan. But, all I had to really worry about was me and getting from August to April on the amount of money I had. No other real obligations. Sure, I had classes, but I liked them. And all I had to do was go to class and travel – no job, no bills, no responsibilities.

How do you write a poem? You can just wing it Decide what story you want to tell and tell it in as few words as possible Look at what you’ve written, underline the most powerful lines, put those together in poem form http://www.poetrysoup.com/poem/_pondering_continued_396812 http://www.poetrysoup.com/poem/move_and_lose_the_greater_trut h_383966 http://www.poetrysoup.com/famous/poem/1670/manhole_covers
