The police are the central law enforcement body in Russia, operating under the Ministry of the Internal Affairs. It was established in 2011 replacing the militia, the former police service.

The police operate according to the Law on police which has been approved by the Federal Assembly and signed into law on February 7, 2011 by President of Russian Federation Dmitry Medvedev.

Purpose of the Police protecting life, health, rights, freedoms
of citizens of the Russian Federation and foreign citizens enforcing law and order protecting property ensuring public safety

Main Activities of the Police
Protection of the person, the society and the state against wrongful encroachments; Prevention and stopping crime; Detection and solution of crimes and inquiries in criminal cases; Search for people; Maintenance of law and order in public areas; Ensuring road traffic safety;

Control over the observance of the legislation of the Russian Federation in the area of weapons trafficking; private detective (search); security-guard activities;

to accept and register applications and messages concerning crimes, administrative offences and accidents; to arrive at the scene of a crime;

stop wrongful acts; eliminate threats to the safety of citizens and public safety; document the circumstances of the crime, or accident; to provide first aid to the victims of crimes;

Under the Police Act Functions of the Police
to secure judicial and social order, to maintain public order and security, to prevent and investigate crimes, to submit cases to prosecutors for decision (consideration of charges), provide anyone with assistance if it falls within their purview.

Police powers have been formulated in accordance with constitutional and human rights, and to ensure that the Finnish Police are capable of effective cooperation in the fight against international crime. Police operations are guided by police ethics and citizens' expectations.

The police service has a two-tier organization.
National Police Board Police Technical Centre Police College of Finland, National police units, Local police departments, The National Police Board is responsible for the performance guidance of these units.

Local Police The local police service is made up of 24 police departments, each of which has a central police station. The police employ about 10,900 people, of whom 7,800 are police officers. There is one police officer per 681 citizens in Finland .

The Police College of Finland
Finland’s sole police training establishment, is located in Tampere. It is responsible for recruitment for police training, student selection, diploma and advanced studies in the police service, leadership training, further training, research and development in the police field.

The Hämeenlinna-based Police Dog Training Centre
is part of the Police College, trains police dog handlers and acquires dogs for the police.

The National Police Museum
is located in the premises of the Police College of Finland, was opened in autumn The Museum gives visitors an overview of the Finnish Police and supports training and research. The Museum collects, examines and displays objects connected with the work of the Finnish Police and helps to preserve traditions and history. It serves the public, the police organization and researchers.
