1862 Hampton Roads to the Peninsula
The Civil War 1862 Hampton Roads to the Peninsula

Union Blockade The Union had begun to blockade the South. The Navy would not allow any ships in or out of Virginia. The South had no navy! So they decided to build one.

Virginia The only place in the South that could build ships was in Virginia at Norfolk and Portsmouth on the Chesapeake Bay.

The Rebel Navy After Manassas, the Confederate Government
started to build a Navy. They found a burned out ship named Merrimack.

Idea! The Confederates decided to rebuild the Merrimack and put iron plates all over it. When it was done, they called it the C.S.S. Virginia. It was steam powered!

First Battle On March 8th 1862 the CSS Virginia attacked the Union wooden ships blockading Virginia. It sank two ships and caused one to run aground!

The Union responds! The Union knew the rebels were building Merrimack and responded with their own iron ship designed by John Ericsson. The ship was called “ Monitor “

BATTLE! On March 9th, 1862 the Virginia went out to sink more ships. It was met by Monitor. They fought for hours. The Virginia was not able to sink any more ships. The Monitor stopped it.

Why is it important? The Confederates were no longer able to stop the Union navy! From that moment, every other navy in the world was obsolete! We had the best and most modern navy in the world! From then on, ships would be made of iron and steel. The age of the battleship was born!

The War on Land After Manassas, the Union army got a new commander, General George McClellen.

What about the slaves? Emancipation means freedom to the slaves. The slaves knew that going to the Union army would free them. They knew this because one General, by accident, started the idea of Emancipation. His name was Benjiman Butler.

How? While McClellen was getting the army ready to fight, hundreds of slaves came to the Union army! The army did not know what to do! So Butler decided to keep them as contraband of war. The freed slaves were called “ contrabands “. This caused all kinds of problems for Lincoln and gave him the idea for emancipation.

McClellen moves. General McClellen did not want to face the rebel army head on, so he moved his army to the Peninsula.

To be continued We’ll keep fighting next week!
