1 Weston High School Advisory discussion on Student Wellness
Friday, December 11, 2015 Please have someone in your advisory take some notes on the reactions, suggestions, and ideas that come out of each Discussion section of this activity. Each of the slides that follows is scripted for you. Please feel free to use other ideas to help promote discussion in your advisory. The three topics focus on topics are: Riding with an impaired driver Driving while impaired Change in the trends of alcohol use before and during the school day or school sponsored events. Freshmen and sophomore advisories may want to focus most of the discussion time on #1 and #2. Junior and Senior advisories may want to spend more time of the discussion on #2 and #3.

2 Student Wellness Discussion
Last April, students at Weston High School participated in the Weston Youth Health Assessment. Today, we are going to talk about a couple of the pieces of data, and ask for your help in addressing some concerns they raised. After we present each item, we’ll ask for your thoughts and ideas on how to address the issues Read the slide as is, then click to move forward

3 TOPIC- Riding with a drinking driver
Last April you were asked: During the past 30 days, did you ride in a car or other vehicle driven by someone who had been drinking alcohol? What do you think the results were—what percentage of students at WHS did this? Data activity? Your responses tell us…. Read the topic, and the question from the survey. Ask the students what they think the results were – you can use one of the activities from the workshop to actively engage the students in this. After asking the students to predict the answer, present the next slide.

4 Almost 90% of WHS students DID NOT ride with a driver who had been using alcohol
Almost 90% of the students did NOT ride with a drinking driver. 13% of students DID ride with a drinking driver in the past 30 days.

5 In other words, in a typical WHS classroom of 24 students… …about 21 kids DID NOT ride with a drinking driver …and about 3 DID This is another way to look at the data— In a typical WHS classroom of 24 students, about 21 kids did NOT ride with a drinking driver in the past 30 days. But, about 3 out of every 24 students did. Click to the next slide.

6 TOPIC –Riding with a marijuana-using driver
Last April you were asked: During the past 30 days, did you ride in a car or other vehicle driven by someone who had been using marijuana? What do you think the results were – how many students at WHS did this? Data activity? Your responses tell us…. Read the topic, and the question from the survey. Ask the students what they think the results were – you can use one of the activities from the workshop to actively engage the students in this. After asking the students to predict the answer, present the next slide.

7 More than 7 out of 10 WHS students DID NOT ride with a driver who had used marijuana
75% of WHS students did NOT ride with a driver who had been using marijuana 25% of WHS students DID ride with a driver who had been using marijuana Click to the next slide

8 In other words, in a typical WHS classroom… …about 18 kids DID NOT ride with driver who had used marijuana …and about 6 DID This is another way to look at the data— In a typical WHS classroom of 24 students, about 18 kids did NOT ride with a driver who had been using marijuana But, about 6 out of every 24 students did. Click to the next slide.

9 Discussion Topic Questions-1:
What did you notice about the data? What are some things we (students, teachers, the community) could do to address any issues that this data raises? Ask the students to discuss the data—possible discussion points-- While most WHS students don’t ride with drinking drivers, more than 1 in 10 did. What do you think of that? While most WHS students don’t ride with drivers who’ve used marijuana, almost 3 of every 10 students did. What do you think of that? Are there any ways we could address the issue of students riding with impaired drivers?

10 TOPIC – Drinking & Driving
Last April, WHS students who have their licenses were asked: During the past 30 days, did you drive a car or other vehicle after you had been using alcohol? What do you think the results were – how many licensed drivers at WHS did this? Data activity? Your responses tell us…. Read the topic, and the question from the survey. Ask the students what they think the results were – you can use one of the activities from the workshop to actively engage the students in this. After asking the students to predict the answer, present the next slide.

11 90% of licensed WHS students DID NOT drive after they had been using alcohol
90% of WHS students did NOT drink and drive 10% of WHS students DID drink and drive Click to the next slide

12 In other words, in a typical WHS classroom of 24 licensed drivers… …about 22 kids DID NOT drive after drinking alcohol …and about 2 DID Most WHS students with their license did NOT drink and drive – about 22 of very 24 licensed WHS students. But about 2 of every 24 licensed WHS students did Click to the next slide.

13 TOPIC – Using Marijuana & Driving
Last April WHS students who had their licenses were asked: During the past 30 days, did you drive a car or other vehicle after you had been using marijuana? What do you think the results were – how many students at WHS did this? Data activity? Your responses tell us…. Read the topic, and the question from the survey. Ask the students what they think the results were – you can use one of the activities from the workshop to actively engage the students in this. After asking the students to predict the answer, present the next slide.

14 Almost 80% of licensed WHS students DID NOT drive after they had been using marijuana
77% of WHS students did NOT drive after using marijuana 23% of WHS students DID drive after using marijuana Click to the next slide

15 In other words, in a typical WHS classroom of 24 licensed students… …about 18 kids DID NOT DRIVE after they had used marijuana …and about 6 DID Most WHS students with their license did NOT drive after using marijuana – about 18 of very 24 licensed WHS students. But about 6 of every 24 licensed WHS students did Click to the next slide.

16 Discussion Topic Questions-2:
What did you notice about the data? What are some things we (students, teachers, the community) could do to address any issues that this data raises? Ask the students to discuss the data—possible discussion points-- While most WHS students with their license don’t drink and drive, about 10% do. What do you think of that? While most WHS students with their licenses don’t drive after using marijuana, almost 3 out of every 10 did. What do you think of that? Why do you think that students seem so much more accepting of driving themselves after using marijuana than after using alcohol? Are there any ways we could address the issue of students driving while impaired?

17 TOPIC – Trends in alcohol use
Do you think the rates of the following behaviors have decreased, stayed the same, or increased since 2011: Using alcohol before school? Using alcohol during school on school property? Using alcohol before or during a school event (dance, game, etc)? Ask the students to predict the trends at WHS between 2011 and 2015 for each question. This is a great activity to have students move from the middle of the room (stayed the same) to the decrease side or the increase side. After reading all the questions, click to the next slide.

18 From 2011 to 2015, WHS students who used alcohol before school in the past 12 months INCREASED (doubled) 2011 2015 The vast majority of kids at WHS do NOT use alcohol before or during school, or before or during school events. But the trends have been concerning. Alcohol use BEFORE school has doubled since 2011, from 4% (about 24 kids) to 8% (about 48 kids).

19 From 2011 to 2015, WHS students who used alcohol during school hours in the past 12 months INCREASED (almost tripled) 2011 2015 Again, the vast majority of kids at WHS do NOT use alcohol DURING school. But, the trend around using during school hours has gone up even more—it has almost tripled since 2011, from 4% (about 24 kids) to 11% (about 70 kids)

20 From 2011 to 2015, WHS students who used alcohol before or during school event INCREASED (almost doubled) 2011 2015 Again, the vast majority of kids at WHS do NOT use alcohol before or during school events. But, the trend around using before or during school events, such as dances, games, etc, has almost doubled, from 12% (about 72 kids) to 22% (141 kids)

21 Discussion Topic Questions-3:
What did you notice about the data? What are some things we (students, teachers, the community) could do to address any issues that this data raises? While the number of students engaging in any of the behaviors we just talked about is still very small, what do you think about each of these rates – drinking before school drinking during the school day drinking before or during school events --doubling or tripling in the past 4 years? Why do you think this might be happening? Are there any ways we could address the issue of students using alcohol before or during the school day or school events? By the way, the trends for marijuana use around these events has stayed fairly consistent for the past four years.

22 Thank you for helping us address these important issues.
