2 School Safety, Bullying and Internet Safety
Carolyn Falcone the SAP Coordinator from Garnet Valley School District and 8 Garnet Valley students are with us today. Students will say their names and the peer leadership and support activities they are involved in at school.

3 Are Kids Safe in School? Mrs Falcone – What has been done to make schools safe places for students? Students – What do you see in school that helps you to feel safe?

4 Do you feel school is going to be important for your later life?
An average of 4.1% higher than the State percentage! Students – what is great about school? Have you enjoyed being in school during the past year?

5 Results shows a steady rise of teacher praise in each grade!
My teachers praise me when I work hard in school. Results shows a steady rise of teacher praise in each grade! Percentage

6 Adults inspire kids to be their
A significantly higher percentage of students % reported that what they are learning in school is going to be very important, if they also reported that school let their parent/caregivers know they had done something well. This fell approximately 30 percentage points if schools did not tell parents/caregivers that they had done something well. Adu Adults inspire kids to be their best and to feel that what they are doing in school has meaning ! Students – Have you had the experience of a teacher letting your parents know that you had done something well? Is there an adult in your community, maybe a coach, Young life leader, etc that has inspired you? All of you go the extra mile to help others, what did you parents or other adults in your life do that helped inspire you to help others? Students who answered that what they are learning in school is going to be very important was significantly higher 61% if they also reported that they were encouraged by people in their neighborhood to do their best! This percentage fell approximately 22 % points if they had not been encouraged by someone in their neighborhood.

7 How often are you bullied?
Just show slide, is it finished?

8 Why are you bullied? Just show slide

9 Why are you bullied? (cont.)
Kids with Disabilities are not bullied at the same rate as other kids. What do you do at your school help kids with disabilities feel included since they are more likely to be left out as they enter high school and beyond?

10 How are you bullied? Show slide

11 Where are you bullied? Show slide

12 A significantly higher rate - 30% of students who were bullied at home were bullied via text and/or social media compared to the 2% who were not bullied that way. Kids who are bullied at home and/or bullied via texting and/or social media, have no safe places and are more likely to be victimized by sexual predators. When we looked at how kids were bullied at home, concerns about texting and social media appeared. Also, the percentage of kids who were being approached by sexual predators increased when kids were bullied that way. Nat Evans – What do parents or kids need to do to stay safe on line? Also of concern, a higher percentage - 53% of the students who reported being bullied via texting and/or social media anywhere were almost twice as likely to report that someone on the internet tried to get them to talk on line about sex, look at sexual pictures, or do something else sexual..

13 In the past 12 months, have you experienced…
What have you seen adults do in school that effectively stopped bullying? What could adults do more of in the case of bullying about sexual orientation, the color of student’s skin, and the country they were born in?

14 Depression and Self-harm
Include students in the discussion of the next few slides on depression and self harm

15 “For youth between the ages of 10 and 24, suicide is the third leading cause of death.”
“The most common depressed thought was ‘at times I think I am no good at all.’” Students- How valid do you think these statistics are? Do you see kids who have suffered with anxiety or depression? Do you think it is a problem in schools? Every grade showed a significant increase in depression since last year. Each average was also higher than the State average.

16 Students who reported being bullied via text and/or social
media were 4 x more likely to feel depressed or sad MOST days, even if they felt OK sometimes in the past 12 months… Bullying via texting and /or social media eliminates safe places for students, increases feelings of depression/sadness, and leads to greater vulnerability to predators. When you see what bullying via texting and social media can do to kids – eliminating safe places since your electronics are always with you, increasing depression and sadness, and leading to greater vulnerability to sexual predators, what should parent/guardians do to monitor their kids on their electronics? At what grade should kids get phones with texting and social media capabilities? Can kids create affirming social media?

17 “Youth suicide results in approximately 4,600 lives lost each year.”
“Each year, approximately 157,000 youth between the ages of 10 and 24 receive medical care for self-inflicted injuries at Emergency Departments across the U.S. (CDC).” “Youth suicide results in approximately 4,600 lives lost each year.” What can students do to help their fellow students feel acknowledged, accepted, appreciated and cared for? What would you do if a student told you they wanted to harm or kill themselves?
