3 Overview of Online Testing in Tennessee
Gateway online program started in Spring 2010 for students falling under the former graduation requirements Currently testing on the 6.9 version of the TestNav test delivery engine. Includes regular forms and audio forms. Large print continues to be administered via paper tests Began multiple windows within an administration in Fall 2010 In Spring 2011, all testers are now considered “repeat testers” (i.e. no students take Gateway for the first time) Copyright © 2011 Pearson Education, Inc. or its affiliates. 4 Changes for Gateway Fall 2011:
Spring 2010-Summer 2011 TestNav 6.9 ends with the Summer 2011 administration. Systems will have a small gap in testing to transition to TestNav 7.5. Two windows per administration Students allowed to test once during a window Fall 2011 – on Transition to TestNav 7.5 October 2011 One window per administration; the administration will last the approximate length of a typical semester Students allowed to test multiple times but must receive remedial instruction in between test attempts PDFs of Practice Tests used to be available on TDOE website. Previously three practice items per subject were available online to practice tools. Now full length Practice Tests will be available as online scorable ePATs. Students will be provided with new resources for remediation via Pearson Perspective System Check Tool Copyright © 2011 Pearson Education, Inc. or its affiliates. All rights reserved.

5 New test delivery opportunities
The Pearson computer-based testing solution consists of two primary components. PearsonAccess is the assessment management system used by educators to manage computer-based testing activities (e.g., managing student data, viewing reports, etc.). TestNav is the test delivery system used by students. TestNav integrates with PearsonAccess to provide a comprehensive assessment solution. Copyright © 2011 Pearson Education, Inc. or its affiliates. 6 Browser-based test delivery technology
The next-generation TestNav (7.5) is a “zero-footprint” browser-based test delivery system that requires no download or installation by Tennessee technology coordinators. TestNav lowers the labor required to implement and maintain the test delivery system. TestNav installs its components when the student launches it to take a test, and removes its components once the test is over. Compatible with industry-standard browsers and works in Windows and Apple environments. Copyright © 2011 Pearson Education, Inc. or its affiliates. All rights reserved.

7 Browser-based TestNav
Client-based TestNav Browser-based TestNav Offers more control over the delivery system, but higher labor costs of implementing and maintaining the software across a large number of computer labs. Offers less control over the delivery system, but much lower labor costs to implement and maintain. Zero-footprint - the TestNav applet downloads when TestNav is launched. Requires no additional work from system/school technology personnel Centralized configuration through PearsonAccess portal allows TestNav configuration from any location Must maintain compatibility with standards and releases of 3rd party technology Software must be installed and maintained on every computer Software updates typically require additional work from system/school technology personnel Installed application includes all necessary 3rd party software (e.g., Java, Flash) Copyright © 2011 Pearson Education, Inc. or its affiliates. 13 System Check for TestNav
System Check helps system and school technology personnel better assess the overall “readiness” of their local network for online testing. It checks 3rd party software and screen resolution to ensure the minimum requirements are met. Copyright © 2011 Pearson Education, Inc. or its affiliates. All rights reserved.

14 TestNav Proctor Caching
Proctor caching is Pearson-supplied software that is used in conjunction with TestNav to reduce bandwidth requirements for school or system networks and accelerate the delivery of test content. Proctor Caching enhances the performance of existing technology in schools. No additional hardware is required. Test content is served from a local computer instead of traveling from Pearson over the Internet. Proctor Caching enables smooth delivery of large numbers of student tests — even in a low-bandwidth network environment. Copyright © 2011 Pearson Education, Inc. or its affiliates. 15 Benefit of Proctor Caching
When testing begins, multiple streams of identical, redundant data can clog up and overwhelm the system or school network When properly used, caching or proxy solutions can reduce the load of data traffic that online assessments place on the network capacity Copyright © 2011 Pearson Education, Inc. or its affiliates. 16 Early Warning System TestNav is designed to tolerate interruptions in Internet service and to safeguard against lost or inaccurate student response data. The Early Warning System (EWS) is integrated functionality that gives TestNav a high degree of fault tolerance and provides additional fail-safes in the event of unexpected network disruptions during online testing Copyright © 2011 Pearson Education, Inc. or its affiliates. All rights reserved.

17 Early Warning System (EWS)
Purpose Keep the online testing environment tamper free Common EWS triggers Anti-virus, auto-updates, screensavers, software update messages, etc. Student tries to access something outside the online testing environment Best practices Turn off updates, screensavers, etc. Install the manufacturer’s monitor and/or graphics drivers Generic drivers sometimes prevent EWS messages from being properly displayed Gray/blue/white screens Copyright © 2011 Pearson Education, Inc. or its affiliates. 18 Electronic Practice Assessment Tools (ePATs)
The existing Gateway Practice Tests have been converted to Electronic Practice Assessments Tools (ePATs). The new ePATS will provide a student score report showing how many items the student answered correctly but they are not suitable for predicting how students will perform on a test. However, they may help familiarize students with the format and tools of the test. Opportunities to practice the read-aloud function will be available prior to testing for students whose IEPs allow for read aloud or prompting accommodations. ePATs are delivered using the same TestNav interface as operational tests. All minimum system requirements that apply to TestNav also apply to ePATs. Note: Internet connection is needed to run TestNav 7.5 based ePATs. 23 What is a Learning Locator™?
Learning Locator™ is the mechanism that connects student performance on an assessment to learning materials specifically chosen to help students succeed. A Learning Locator is printed on the Gateway Class Report and IPR. Each subject tested will have its own Learning Locator associated with the student’s results. On the Perspective website, parents and students can enter the Learning Locator and access resources personalized to that student’s needs. Recommended resources are organized by state objectives or standards. Students can work through the resources on their own or as directed by their teacher or family member.
