1 Chapter 8 Waves

2 What are Waves? Rhythmic disturbance that carries energy
If the wave needs a medium it’s a mechanical wave If they can travel through space without a medium its an electromagnetic wave

3 Mechanical Waves Transverse Compressional
Matter moves up and down or back and forth at right angles to the wave motion Compressional Matter moves forward and backward along the same direction as the wave– example sound waves

4 Electromagnetic Waves
Waves that travel where there is no matter Radio Waves Infrared Waves Visible Light Waves X-Rays Sun’s Rays

5 Wave Properties Amplitude—distance above or below the normal line
Related to amount of energy the wave carries Greater the energy the bigger the amplitude Wavelength– the distance from the top of one crest to the next Frequency—how many wavelengths pass a point in 1 sec. Frequency and Wavelength together effect color and pitch blue light> frequency, < wavelength than red higher frequency= higher pitch

6 Wave Properties Wave speed—frequency times wavelength
Draw and label the wave below

7 Wave Behavior Reflection—when waves strike a surface and bounce back
Refraction--bending of waves as they move from one medium to another Diffraction—bending of waves around a barrier

8 What happens when waves meet?
Interference—when two waves combine to form a new wave Reducing noise--ear protection devices contain materials to absorb some of the energy carried by sound waves
