9 Report Published on 8 March 2017, the report covers four key areas
Entry into general practice – raising the profile as a first career choice and increasing the availability of training placements for students Establishing the role of the GP Nurse – ensuring appropriate training and support is available for new GPNs Enhancing the role with professional development and career progression Expanding the healthcare support workforce with standardised training and career paths.

10 Recommendations The report contains 17 recommendations covering these areas:- Improve training capacity for the general practice nurse workforce by: Providing access to accredited training to equip them for each level of their role Ensuring that there is access to quality assured education and training to support career development and inform revalidation if appropriate Raise the profile of general practice nursing, to increase the uptake of the role as a first-destination career by: Increasing the number of pre-registration nurse clinical placements in general practice Designing a standardised and accredited competency based preceptorship programme to equip all nurses for their general practice nursing role.   Retain the knowledge and expertise of existing general practice nurses by: Developing GPN educator roles to cover all CCG areas, including the promotion of mentor training for all GPNs Improve access to return schemes by offering a general practice specific ‘return to practice’ programme Development of a sustainable and easily accessible ‘how-to’ toolkit and web based resource to support the implementation of general practice nursing workforce initiatives

11 Big issues We want and advertise for experienced nurses
We usually want part timers We aren’t always that good at supporting new nurses to General Practice Are we planning in time for the retirement risk? There wont be enough of the new roles to replace GPNs quick enough

12 We need to be better at….... Induction of new clinical staff to GP land Planning their foundation training-sourcing education Supporting our practice nurses as educators and mentors Making GP land an attractive career for new entrants Retaining staff

13 How can the Advanced Training Practice Scheme help?
Student nurse placements GPN Ready Scheme Return to Practice HCA Apprentice Scheme Practice support Mentor support
