1 Warm-up Get out the Interpreting the Bill of Rights Worksheet from yesterday. I will be collecting them. You have been elected the new Mayor of Baltimore. Before leaving office, the old mayor gave jobs to several of his political friends but the paperwork hasn’t made it to the personnel (hiring) office yet. A. Should you 1) honor the jobs promised by the old mayor, or 2) cancel the jobs since they aren’t “officially” in the system yet? B. What are the possible negatives to denying these people their jobs? What are the possible positives to allowing them to take these jobs? C. Would it make a difference if the potential employees had worked against you in the mayoral elections?

2 Objective Students will describe the principle of judicial review by analyzing the impact of Marbury vs Madison on the functioning of the Supreme Court.

Classwork: Marbury vs. Madison Review

4 Unit Vocabulary Add the following term and definition to your Cornell Notes. Judicial Review: the power of the Supreme Court to interpret the Constitution and to rule actions of the executive and legislative branches unconstitutional. Judicial Review is not mentioned in the Constitution. It was established by the court case of Marbury v Madison.

5 Classwork: Marbury vs. Madison
As a class, we will read the case of Marbury vs. Madison and answer the discussion questions. Then, you will take a look at Article III of the Constitution and The Judiciary Act of 1789 and answer the questions on the back of the worksheet.

6 Did we cover everything?
