From: Stereoselective Effects of Etomidate Optical Isomers on Gamma-aminobutyric Acid Type A Receptors and Animals Anesthes. 1998;88(3): Figure Legend: Figure 6. R(+) and S(-) etomidate are equally effective at disrupting lipid bilayers. The main chain-melting phase transition of dipalmitoyl phosphatidylcholine bilayers can be seen by the abrupt change in light scattering (and hence absorbance) at [approxiamately] 41 [degree sign] Celsius. In the presence of 1 mM etomidate, the phase transition is decreased from a control value of / [degree sign] Celsius to / [degree sign] Celsius for the R(+) isomer and to / [degree sign] Celsius for the S(-) isomer.
