1 INTRODUCTION TO COMPUTING
Computer Basics

2 The Information Age Computers are useful in Society to advance:
Business Education Art and Music Medicine and Health Military Science and Research

3 What is a computer? An electronic device that accepts input, stores data through RAM and hard drives, processes commands, gives output.

4 Four components of a Computer
Input (mouse, keyboard, microphone, flash drive, finger) Output (monitor, speakers, printer, flash drive, hard-drive) Memory (Random Access Memory) Processing (Central Processing Unit)

5 Which of the following is a computer?
toaster cell phone router printer navigation system

6 Computer Toaster NO cell phone YES Router YES Printer YES
navigation system YES

7 Robots Advanced Robots

8 Operating Systems Windows - Personal Computer Operating System. Windows 10 Mac OS - Apple Unix - family of multitasking, multiuser computer operating systems that derive from the original AT&T UNIX and Bell labs. iOS - Mobile Operating System created by Apple Android - mobile operating system created by Google based by linux

9 Operating System The operating system is the software that controls computer resources such as memory, the CPU, and connected devices. It also controls the programs running on the computer, and helps you install new devices.

10 Operating System

11 9 Things to Consider when purchasing a Computer?
Desktop vs Laptop CPU -Processor Speed - measured in Gigahertz impacted by the number of cores RAM- how many processes can occur simultaneously Hard- Drive - consider the rotations per minute of the drive. How fast can you access stored data? Peripherals - DVD drive, usb drives, speakers, HDMI, wifi, bluetooth, SD slot for photography Operating System - (mac vs. windows) Graphics Card (integrated vs. dedicated) integrated graphics relies on the computer’s memory and is typically slower. Dedicated includes it’s own processor and memory. A dedicated card tends to be higher performing. Will you be gaming with the computer? Cost - How much are you willing to spend? Do you need the latest and greatest?

12 Computer Program A set of instructions a computer uses to perform tasks.

13 Computer Network A computer network consists of two or more computers linked to share resources (printer, software, data) Local Area Network (LAN) Wide Area Network (WAN)

14 Internet Worldwide network of interconnected computers used to exchange information and data.
