Now Let’s Practice: Evaluating Student Examples
Working and groups, you will work together to break down a writing prompt and assess whether or not a student has successfully address the writing prompt questions. You will have 10 minutes to read the prompt and annotate the prompt. After annotating the prompt, you will be given an additional five minutes to read the student example. As a group you will discuss the writer’s strengths and weaknesses. As a group decide the score based on the rubric that you will assign to the writer. When the teacher says “SWITCH,” you will rotate to the next student example. At the end of all rotations, we will discuss each example.

Lesson Wrap Up: Exit Slip
On the Post-It note placed on your desk, answer the following questions: Which student example reflects your type of writing? What changes might you need to make to ensure that you are addressing the prompt? You will have two minutes to respond and place your note on the classroom door.
