1 Physical Science Chapter 1 Section 3

2 Scientific Models A model is a rep of an obj or sys
3 kinds of scientific models Physical Mathematical conceptual

3 Physical Models Examples: model airplanes, dolls, & drawings
One cannot experience how the actual airplane works with models (usually)

4 Mathematical Models These models are made up of math equations & data
Some are simple Some are complex Weather forecasters use this model

5 Conceptual Models These are systems of ideas
Some make comparisons to others systems of ideas The Big Bang Theory is conceptual All types can help especially when the model shows the subject when it is too small to see.

6 Using Models to Build Scientific Knowledge
A scientific theory is an explanation for many hypothesis & observations A theory not only explains an observation you’ve made but can also predict what might happen in the future Models can be changed or replaced.

7 Scientific Laws A law is a summary of many experimental results & observations A law tells you how things work. The Law of Conservation of Mass says that during a chemical change, the total mass of the materials formed is the same as the total mass of the starting materials.
