1 Signs, Signals, and Roadway Markings
Chapter 2 Signs, Signals, and Roadway Markings

2 Traffic Signals Please draw the following signs and indicate the appropriate color(s) for the signs: Stop Yield Speed Limit School Zone Railroad Crossing No Passing Zone Lane Reduction Guide Sign Construction Sign Do Not Enter Be prepared to come up and share on the board what your signs look like.

3 Shapes have a meaning… What do the following shapes mean?

4 Colors have meanings too!
RED YELLOW ORANGE WHITE BLACK GREEN BLUE BROWN = Stop, yield, prohibited = Warning = Construction = Regulatory = Distance & Destination = Motorist Service = Public Recreation & Cultural Interest

5 Regulatory Signs Stop Yield Speed Limit Do Not Enter
No Right/Left Turn No Parking One way Tell you laws you must obey. Used to direct to turn or go straight, direct one-way traffic, control parking and passing. Red words on white or white on red tell what not to do. Black on white usually tell what to do. Black and white signs with red circle and slash indicate that something is prohibited.

6 Warning Signs Lane Reduction/Road Narrows Signal Ahead Divided Highway
Sharp Turn Ahead Side Road Ahead Two-Way Traffic Merging Traffic Crossroad Ahead Pedestrian Crossing Uphill/Downhill Animal Crossing Low Clearance (at bridges) Alter you to hazardous situations ahead. Usually yellow background and black symbols/words. Also most are diamond shaped.

7 Other Warning Signs School Zones No Passing Zones Construction Zones
Railroad Signs School Zones are pentagon shaped with yellow and black. No passing zones are pennant shaped and are yellow and black. Construction zones are diamond shaped and are orange and black Railroad signs are both Round and Crossbucks. Round signs are yellow and black and crossboucks are white and black.

8 Guide Signs Route Signs Numbers indicate general direction of road.
U.S. Route Markers State Route Marker County Route Marker Interstate Route Marker Numbers indicate general direction of road. US Route markers are square, black and white, and have a shield-type emblem. State Routes are square, black and white, and have a circular emblem. County routes are generally a pentagon shape with yellow writing and blue background. Interstate routes are red, white, and blue and are shield shaped. An east-west road is an even numbered road (I-88). A north-south road is odd numbered (I-55). A three digit number route that starts with an odd number leads into a city (I-394). A three digit number route that starts with an even number does around a city (I-294)

9 Other Guide Signs Green signs Blue signs Brown signs
Green signs provide information on mileage to other destinations/exits. Blue signs provide information on services near the highway (Hotel, restaurant, restrooms, etc.). Brown signs provide information on tourist attractions and other points of interest. (National parks, amusement parks, stadiums, etc.)

10 Red Light Yellow Light Green Light Flashing Red Light Traffic Signals
Red lights are always on top in a vertical setting. You must come to a full stop. Yellow lights are always in the middle of the setting. Yellow lights mean clear the intersection, not speed up to make the light. Green lights are always on the bottom and mean to proceed through the intersection if safe to do so. Flashing red light means you should treat the intersection as a stop sign, or it is alerting you to a stop sign coming up. Arrow lights indicate what direction you can go in (if green), or can’t go in (if yellow or red).

11 Roadway markings Solid yellow line separates traffic in opposite directions and means no passing/do not enter area. Broken yellow line separates traffic in opposite directions = passing allowed if safe to do so. Broken white lines separate lanes of traffic in same direction and allow passing. Solid White lines separate lanes moving in same direction and mean stay in your lane.

12 Other roadway markings
Stop Lines/Crosswalks Lane Arrows Railroad Crossings “Rumble” Strips School Zones Solid white lines that are perpendicular to your path of travel. Indicate where to stop at and where pedestrians may cross. Lane arrows indicate left, right, or straight. Railroad crossings indicate a railroad crossing approaching. Rumble strips alert drivers to edges of roads, toll booths approaching. School Zones large white letters SCHOOL on ground in white indicating a school zone.

13 THE END For your quiz you should know: What the different shapes mean.
What the different colors mean. What the different lights of a traffic signal mean. What the difference is between solid lines and broken lines (both white and yellow). Be able to explain where to stop at an intersection with a stop sign.
