1 College Planning :: Naviance Workshop
Blend our traditional presentation with new resources. 2nd half of period we will be logging in and getting started. *Set timer for 20 minutes.

2 what do colleges look at?
rigor of high school classes grades & GPA test scores (ACT & SAT) extra-curricular activities recommendations essays college courses while taken in high school class rank academic reputation of high school

3 how much does college cost?
Yearly tuition at Ohio’s state supported colleges approximately $7, ,000. ($9,700 average) At an Ohio Private college tuition can be $8,000- $48,000 ($22,743-- this figure includes 4 year technical schools, tend to be less expensive) Room and board can add another $8,000-15,000 ($13,000) And don’t forget books ($600-2,000)

4 WHS Financial Aid Night
got financial aid? September 6:30pm in the PAC see p. 13 WHS Financial Aid Night *parents can receive help with the FAFSA * learn about applying for grants and scholarships local scholarships available in January. One month to complete that application. Last year 81 seniors were awarded local scholarship- total of $127,000 We will provide the FAFSA to every senior. We encourage every senior attending college to complete the FAFSA.

Personalized assistance with Financial Aid (FAFSA), scholarship search, college applications. Sign up online thru Sign-Up Genius (Guidance Webpage or Naviance)

6 ACT Writing Test- sometimes required, often recommended
ACT/SAT See front cover for code, pages 7-8 for test dates and registration deadlines. ACT Writing Test- sometimes required, often recommended take the writing test at least once. Many colleges want scores send DIRECTLY to their college. Do this during registration-- or you will pay $12.00 for each report. 10/28 - next test, register by 9/22 Know school code during ACT registration-- See front of packet!!! Need this to send scores to colleges. Be certain to send your best scores to schools- if writing ACT not the best, send it along with the other

7 applications & transcripts
Plan to have your applications done by Thanksgiving. see p. 4-5,12 Transcript Request Form (see Naviance home screen) Print from Naviance pick up copies from Guidance *You must fill out a separate Transcript Request Form for EACH college. * remember deadlines- they are real

8 using the common app? see p. 5-6 !! IMPORTANT STEP !! You must link your common app account with Naviance. Use The Common Application Tip Doc. This is located in Naviance, too! **Note: Indicat in Naviance if you are using Common App or Directly to Institution See page 6 for list of colleges!

9 letters of recommendation/ student profile
like peanut butter and jelly You must TALK to the teacher, IN PERSON, and ask them to write your letter. see p. 10 Give teachers 2 week notice at minimum. 2. Hand them a copy of your student profile (pick up in guidance office or print off Naviance- document library) 3. Send an electronic request to teacher in Naviance. another piece of your application- for some students. remember deadlines! carefully select your teacher
