Factors that influence intoxication:
Amount consumed, presence of food, genetic factors, medicine or drugs in system, size, and gender
Fetal Alcohol Syndrome
Physical and mental defects that affect a fetus that has been exposed to alcohol because of the mothers consumption during pregnancy
Alcohol is a Depressant – it slows us down causing our judgment and reasoning to be impaired
Factors that influence intoxication effects include:
-gender
-weight
-height
And whether or not there is any other substances present in the body at time of consumption (or taken soon after)

2. Blood Alcohol Concentration
Amount of alcohol in a person’s blood, expressed as a percentage .08 is legal limit
Binge Drinking
Multiple drinks in one sitting where an individual is drinking to get drunk. This can lead to alcohol poisoning/overdose

3. Alcohol Effects Short Term Effects
Irritates mouth, throat, esophagus, & stomach
Heart has to work harder
Body loses heat
Causes liver to work harder
Take the liver approximately one hour to process/breakdown 1 drink
Causes dehydration
The legal limit is .08 which is referred to as an individuals Blood Alcohol Concentration
-for most women of average weight and height this can be approximately one drink
-on drink is referred to as 1 shot, 1 – 8oz glass of wine, or 1 – 12oz beer
Binge Drinking is drinking to get drunk and consuming multiple drinks in 1 sitting
-this would be more than 1 drink in an hour
-it takes the liver 1 hour to breakdown and process 1 drinks (as referred to above)
-when you have more drinks then your liver can keep up with the remaining alcohol that is waiting to be “detoxified” by the liver builds up in the bloodstream and directly affects the functioning of the brain
One common Long term effect of alcohol abuse is Cirrhosis of the liver. This is when healthy liver tissue dies from working so hard to detoxify the mass amounts of alcohol that has been consumed that the tissue turns to scar tissue. Cirrhosis can cause liver cancer.
