3 RESPONSIBILITY WHO EVER YOU ARE OR WHO EVER YOU WORK FOR, WHILE ON A CONSTRUCTION SITE, YOU HAVE A RESPONSIBILITY TO ENSURE YOU WORK SAFELY AND DON’T ENDANGER YOURSELF OR OTHERS BY YOUR ACTIONS OR OMISSIONS.

5 THE LAW THE HEALTH AND SAFETY AT WORK ACT 1974 PLACES DUTIES ON ALL PERSONEL WITHIN THE WORK PLACE. THIS INCLUDES YOU !

6 YOUR DUTIES It shall be the duty of every employee while at work…………….
To take reasonable care for the health and safety of himself and of other persons who may be affected by his acts or omissions at work; and As regards any duty or requirement imposed on his employer or any other person by or under any of the relevant statutory provisions, to co-operate with him so far as is necessary to enable that duty or requirement to be performed or complied with. No person shall intentionally or recklessly interfere with or misuse anything provided in the interests of health, safety or welfare

7 EMPLOYERS DUTIES It shall be the duty of every employer to ensure, so far as is reasonably practicable, the health, safety and welfare at work of all his employees. The provision and maintenance of plant and systems of work that are, so far as is reasonably practicable, safe and without risks to health The provision of such information, instruction, training and supervision as is necessary to ensure, so far as is reasonably practicable, the health and safety at work of his employees So far as is reasonably practicable as regards any place of work under the employer's control, the maintenance of it in a condition that is safe and without risks to health and the provision and maintenance of means of access to and egress from it that are safe and without such risks

9 RISK ASSESSMENTS The Management of Health and Safety at Work (MHSW) Regulations 1999 require all employers and self-employed persons to assess the risks to workers and any others who may be affected by their undertaking.

10 5 STEPS TO RISK ASSESSMENT
IDENTIFY THE HAZARDS. DECIDE WHO OR WHAT COULD BE HARMED OR DAMAGED. EVALUATE THE RISKS AND CHECK IF THE CURRENT SAFETY MEASURES ARE ADEQUATE. RECORD YOUR FINDINGS. REVIEW YOUR FINDINGS ON A REGULAR BASIS AND UPDATE AS AND WHEN REQUIRED.

HARD HAT HI-VIZ BOOTS EYE PROTECTION EAR PROTECTION GLOVES STAY VISIBLE AND STAY SAFE !

18 SITE ACCESS & EGRESS WHERE POSSIBLE, PEDESTRIANS AND VEHICLES/PLANT SHOULD BE SEGREGATED. PEDESTRIAN CROSSOVER POINTS AROUND SITE WILL HELP PERSONNEL WHILE WALKING THROUGH TRAFFIC ROUTES. (IT’S A SITE VERSION OF A ZEBRA CROSSING) LIMIT TRAFFIC SPEED TO 10 MPH

19 TRAINING ENSURE YOU ARE TRAINED TO DO YOUR JOB SAFELY.
CERTIFICATES OF TRAINING SHOULD BE TAKEN TO SITE TO PROVE YOU HAVE BEEN TRAINED. DO NOT USE MACHINES OR PLANT, ALTER SCAFFOLDS UNLESS YOU ARE TRAINED TO DO SO.

20 TOOL BOX TALKS REGULAR TOOL BOX TALKS ARE A REMINDER OF SAFE WORKING ON SITE. BEST GIVEN A FEW MINUTES AFTER YOUR MORNING OR LUNCHTIME BREAK. SUBJECTS WILL VARY DEPENDING ON THE SITE, STANDARD ONES INCLUDE………PPE, WORKING AT HEIGHT, TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT, OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH, MANUAL HANDLING, PLANT SAFETY AND WORKING IN EXCAVATIONS.

21 SITE RULES ALL CONSTRUCTION SITES HAVE RULES, THESE DIFFER SLIGHTLY DEPENDING ON THE PRINCIPLE CONTRACTOR, SITE LOCATION OR EVEN THE CLIENT. ALL THE RULES SHOULD BE FOLLOWED FOR YOUR OWN SAFETY.

22 SITE INDUCTIONS YOU’VE PROBABLY HAD HUNDREDS AND YOU’LL PROBABLY HAVE HUNDREDS MORE DURING YOUR WORKING CAREER, THE REASON IS… ALL SITES ARE DIFFERENT THEY ALL HAVE THEIR OWN HAZARDS,LAYOUTS AND DIFFERENT ACTIVITIES. THE PURPOSE OF THE SITE INDUCTION IS TO INFORM YOU OF EXISTING HAZARDS AND ALSO TELL YOU ABOUT THE SITE RULES FOR THAT INDIVIDUAL SITE.

READ YOUR METHOD STATEMENTS AND RISK ASSESSMENTS IF SOMEONE ELSE IS WORKING DANGEROUSLY, DON’T IGNORE IT, TELL THE SITE MANAGER BEFORE SOMEONE GETS HURT OR KILLED
