2 Defining restorative justice
Bringing people with a stake and a different perspective together to discuss a particular crime and its effects Through face-to-face meetings Through mediators Through letters Hodder & Stoughton © 2017

3 The aims of restorative justice
Restorative justice aims to help both the offender and victim From the victim's perspective they are given some power in the process. This is important because being a victim is disempowering. With regard to the offender, they can benefit from restorative justice by seeing the effects of their actions and gaining insight into their own behaviour. Hodder & Stoughton © 2017

4 The Shapland Report (2008) 98% of meetings ended in agreement
85% of participants were satisfied Concluded that restorative justice is effective in several ways 14% reduction in reoffending rates Hodder & Stoughton © 2017

5 Key points from interview
The culture of prison makes it hard to engage in any kind of programme. The way in which restorative justice is introduced to offenders is important. Restorative justice programmes take a while to have an effect, up to several years. Restorative justice benefits offenders by giving insight — ‘a journey of self-exploration’. The major limitation of restorative justice is that it has to be voluntary to work and many offenders will not take it up. Hodder & Stoughton © 2017

6 Conclusions Restorative justice aims to be beneficial to both offender and victim. It is hardest but most effective when conducted face to face. Most participants reach agreement through restorative justice and most are satisfied with the process. Restorative justice results in a reduction of reoffending. Restorative justice gives offenders insight into their own lives and an incentive to change. The main limitation of restorative justice is that it has to be volutary. Hodder & Stoughton © 2017
