6 A bioeconomy for Europe
Europe has to address key inter-related challenges 1. Food security 2. Energy security 3. Climate change 4. Re-industrialisation of Europe 5. Reducing our dependence on fossil resources

7 A sustainable bioeconomy
The sustainable production of renewable biological resources Integrated system for the conversion of biomass into food, feed, bio-based products, biofuels and bioenergy. Food production is at the heart of the bioeconomy - We must not negatively impact food production

8 A sustainable bioeconomy
Biomass definition must be inclusive Agriculture Agri-food Marine Waste Residues/Side streams/resting biomass Products definition must be inclusive Originally – fuels then chemcials/plastics/polymers/ natural fibres but increasingly protein, food and feed ingredients, health promoting molecules, bioactive chemicals

9 Scientific priorities: A balanced sustainable bioeconomy
Improvement of soil quality – COP 21 and 22 (4/1000) GHG emissions reduction Resource efficiency – Biomass, water, nutrients, energy Evidence for environmental claims Effect of diversion of side streams away from animal feed should be undertaken (economic/enviornmental)

10 Scientific priorities: A balanced sustainable bioeconomy
Coordination and support actions needed to maximise the impact for society A bioeconomy is complex and requires integration of science, technology, policy, society, environment, certification, standards, labelling, education, training, stakeholder engagement, risk perception, rural and urban development, investment, circularity, sustainability. A sustainable bioeconomy will not be built on technology alone.

11 Bioeconomy can deliver:
New products, new functionalities, processes, and value chains Diversification of agriculture, marine, forestry and industrial activity Reduce/remove dependency on fossil based resources Socioeconomic and environmental benefits Rural development Wealth creation Stimulation of investment and entrepreneurial activity Any applications to BBI should demonstrate the impact of the research (solving a European problem/replicability in multiple regions in Europe)

12 Bioeconomy strategy and SIRA
Bioeconomy strategy 2012 – Value chains SIRA – Gaps and needs of the bioeconomy SIRA review Value chains to value web Pillars to systems Key Strategic orientations

13 Conclusion Sustainable bioeconomy Creating new value chains
Addressing a critical unmet need
