1 UEE Seminar Series Coping with Drought in a Changing Climate Abstract
Distinguished Speakers’ Hosted by School of Urban & Environmental Engineering Coping with Drought in a Changing Climate Speaker : Jinyoung Rhee, Ph.D. Division of Adaptation Research Korea Adaptation Center for Climate Change Korea Environment Institute Abstract Both wet and dry extremes are projected to be more severe due to the impacts of climate change. The amount of rainfall is likely to increase in Korea with augmented intensity. Dry spells between the intense rain events are expected to cause drought with various time scales, more often and more seriously. Since the onset and termination of drought are not easy to detect, there have been efforts to monitor drought using a variety of drought indices for about fifty years. Geographic Information System and remote sensing techniques have also been used for drought studies during the recent two decades; GIS provides useful tools for displaying and analyzing, and remotely sensed data contain invaluable drought information especially in regions with limited in-situ data. Two examples of the application of GIS and remote sensing are presented: the delineation of climate regions using in-situ and remote sensing data, and the monitoring of agricultural drought in arid and humid regions using the multi-sensor remote sensing data. A web-based application for drought monitoring in the Carolinas USA, Dynamic Drought Index Tool is also introduced as an example of regional drought monitoring tools. Date & Time : 10:30 am, August 14, 2012 (Tue) Location : 811, EB2 Contact : Prof. Myong-In Lee(2813)
