7 Developing a good CV Take time to prepare a really good CV Spelling
Grammar There are several style of CV (Performance, Functional, Targeted, Educational) Include all the ‘need to know’ and leave the ‘nice to know’ out DON’T lots of companies together…..they won’t feel loved….. Inform yourself on the companies for which you are applying If you are not getting interviews. Need to look at the quality of your application. Scale back and refocus……..

Googling company websites and applying on spec Word of mouth Networking through family / friends / contracts Private employment agencies Staying in p/t job or where they’ve already had w/ex or taking up a portfolio of p/t jobs Some will also study distance learning (e.g. OU)

10 Finding Employment An apprenticeship can be a good route if you want to get training for a specific job sector and be earning at the same time. If you do not have the relevant job specific experience you might have to complete an Advanced Apprenticeship, even if you have A Levels There are 40+ different job areas now offering Higher Apprenticeships, which are higher education level qualifications (Level 4+). Employers are asking for A Levels and other Level 3 qualifications as entry requirements.

There have been more than 2.2 million apprenticeship starts since May 2010 Apprenticeships are proven to increase the earnings of those who undertake them 7 out of 10 employers found apprenticeships useful to their business Apprenticeships are available at some of our best companies, large and small – like Google, ITV, Sky, IBM and BAE Systems Apprenticeships are available right up to degree level Jamie Oliver, Karen Millen, Stella McCartney, and Ross Brawn all started their careers as apprentices apprenticeships to be given equal legal treatment as degrees commitment to create 3 million apprenticeships by 2020 will be enshrined in law public sector bodies will be set targets to help reach 3 million

12 Finding Apprenticeships
Search for vacancies online and by looking at companies' websites or making speculative applications. You can also search for an Apprenticeship on the gov.uk website.  Not all sectors offer Higher Apprenticeships qualifications so make sure you check if they are available in your chosen sector. Higher Apprenticeship opportunities are likely to be highly competitive!

20 LOCAL NEWS Wakefield's first dedicated retail recruitment website – – has been launched in partnership between Wakefield Council, Jobcentre Plus, Trinity Walk and The Ridings Shopping Centre to help more people into work. Flair4Retail advertises vacancies at both The Ridings Shopping Centre and Trinity Walk. Wakefield is set to become a ‘creative hub’ over 100,000 sq ft of the derelict Rutland Mills site is set to be transformed in a landmark deal that will see the city’s waterfront regeneration project completed.

21 Local News Yummy Yorkshire, the farm-based ice cream parlour in, Huddersfield, plans to double in size. (Huddersfield Examiner 05/01/16). The 315 Bar and Restaurant in Lepton is expanding creating at least eight jobs when it opens in the summer. The expansion will include a hotel with eight rooms, a spa, a hairdresser and beauty area (Huddersfield Examiner 08/01/16). Henry Boot Construction are create 250 new jobs in construction, retail, sales, business admin, The new park forms part of the wider Snowhill master plan (Wakefield First 17/3/16).

22 Local News Scarborough Group International has been given planning permission for a multi-screen, 2,000 seat cinema at Thorpe Park in East Leeds. Work on the shopping, leisure and residential development began in The whole development is expected to create 4,000 local employment opportunities, and 13,000 jobs overall (Business Desk 13/01/2016). Keyland Developments, sister company to Yorkshire Water, has submitted plans to Wakefield Council for a new employment scheme on its 47-acre Wakefield estate which could generate up to 1,000 jobs (Business Daily 14/01/2016).

23 Local News Ben Sherman the clothing brand is moving to Leeds. They are planning on creating 40 jobs in the next six months with the move. The company has taken over seven high street stores, Leeds-based Villa Care creating 30 new jobs A retail scheme in Wakefield is set to create 250 jobs. Covéa Insurance has created 50 new jobs at its Halifax offices.
