Adolescence Is the transition period between childhood and adulthood
Initiation rites of passage mark admission into adulthood. Some of these celebrations include birthdays, bar mitzvahs, graduation, and even weddings

Puberty Is the biological end of childhood.
During this time reproductive organs of both males and females develop and dramatically change the body of an adolescent Primary and secondary sex characteristics change during puberty

Menarche and Spermarche
Around the ages of 12 to 13 when puberty occurs a female will experience their first menstrual period known as menarche. Most societies consider this the beginning of womanhood Spermarche or a males first ejaculation marks the same time for boys and their puberty usually occurs a little later than that of girls

Asynchrony Is when an adolescent has an uneven growth or maturing of bodily parts. For example , a boy’s hand and feet may be disproportionate with the rest of the body. Eventually the body parts will assume the correct proportions

Erik Erikson Came up with the concept of identity crisis. This is where an adolescent has a time of inner conflict where they are trying to figure out or find their identity

Judith Rich Harris Believes that parents do not teach children how to behave in the world, peer groups do. She would argue that peer groups influence how children behave more and that the only way a child’s personality can be effected by a parent is if the parent is placing that child in the right surroundings to meet those peers

Adolescents/ Eating Disorders
Appearance becomes very important to adolescents during their teenage years During this time especially, teenagers are vulnerable , as they are confronted in the media (movie, t.v., magazines) with how important appearance is in the world today This is a difficult time for some teenagers as they transition into adulthood

Anorexia Nervosa Is when someone refuses to eat. People who suffer from this believe they are fat no matter how thin they become.

Bulimia Nervosa Is when someone will binge eat and follow with purging. This is usually done by vomiting, using laxatives, or very harsh dieting.

Androgynous Combination of traditionally male and female characteristics. For example earrings, long hair, etc.
