BasicMed Overview

BasicMed Overview Third Class Medical Reform Aircraft specifications: Not authorized to carry more than 6 occupants and has a maximum certificated takeoff weight of not more than 6,000 pounds Flight rules: Day or night, VFR or IFR (if appropriately rated) Passengers: Up to five passengers Aeromedical education: Pilots must take a free online course every two years. AOPA’s course available soon! Physical Examination: At least once, every four years, physical exam from state-licensed physician. Includes checklist and signatures. Altitude Restrictions: Up to 18,000 feet MSL Airspeed Limitations: 250 knots indicated airspeed (IAS) Eligibility Requirements: Current state issued driver’s license and have held a valid FAA medical certificate, regular or special issuance, at any time since July 15,2006 There are 2,378 more women pilots than in 2004 (6.4%). Women were 6.3% of total pilots in 2004 and 6.7% at the end of In , they were just over 7% of total pilots

Pilot Certifications/Authorizations
BasicMed Overview Third Class Medical Reform Pilot Certifications/Authorizations Upon completion of the online medical education course, pilots will need to make the following certifications and authorizations – Authorize the FAA to access their driving record from the National Driver Registry (NDR) Certify they are under the care and treatment of a physician if diagnosed with any medical condition that may impact their ability to fly Certify that the medical exam checklist was followed and signed Understand that they cannot act as PIC if know or have reason to know of any medical condition that would make them unable to operate an aircraft in a safe manner If clinically diagnosed with a neurological or mental health condition will need to certify that they are under the care of a State-license medical specialist for that condition There are 2,378 more women pilots than in 2004 (6.4%). Women were 6.3% of total pilots in 2004 and 6.7% at the end of In , they were just over 7% of total pilots

BasicMed Overview Third Class Medical Reform Under BasicMed, the FAA identified certain medical conditions that will require a pilot to obtain a special issuance medical one-time only. The conditions are limited to the following: Cardiovascular: myocardial infarction (heart attack); coronary heart disease that has required treatment; cardiac valve replacement; and heart replacement. Neurological: epilepsy; a transient loss of control of nervous system functions without satisfactory medical explanation of the cause; and disturbances of consciousness without satisfactory medical explanation of the cause. Mental Health: personality disorder that is severe enough to have repeatedly manifested itself by overt acts; psychosis defined as a case in which an individual has manifested or may reasonably be expected to manifest delusions, hallucinations, grossly bizarre or disorganized behavior, or other commonly accepted symptoms of psychosis; bipolar disorder; and substance dependence within the previous two years as defined in FAR (a)(4). There are 2,378 more women pilots than in 2004 (6.4%). Women were 6.3% of total pilots in 2004 and 6.7% at the end of In , they were just over 7% of total pilots
