First settled by Eastern Polynesians between 1250 and 1300 Māori - divided into Iwi and Hapū The first Europeans known to have reached New Zealand were Dutch explorer Abel Tasman and his crew in 1642 revisited in 1769 when British explorer James Cook mapped almost the entire coastline

4 History The Māori population declined to around 40% of its pre-contact level during the 19th century William Hobson declared British sovereignty over all of New Zealand on 21 May 1840 gained a representative government in 1852 and the first Parliament met in 1854. Situated in the region of the same name, on the North Island's western coast, Taranaki is a 2518m volcanic cone that last erupted in the mid-19th century

13 Fox Glacier cave The South Island's Westland National Park is home to this glacier and its spectacular ice caves. In 13km, the Fox drops from the peaks of the Southern Alps to rainforest along the coast

16 Tongariro Alpine Crossing
The Tongariro Crossing trail runs for 19km through volcanic terrain in the center of the North Island. It passes the base of Mt. Ngauruhoe, known to a lot of the world as Mt. Doom. The national park is the country's oldest Tongariro Alpine Crossing
