1 MICROSCOPE BASICS

2 PARTS OF THE MICROSCOPE
carry Always carry a microscope with one hand holding the arm and one hand under the base.

3 1. Always carry a microscope with two hands, with one hand holding the arm and one hand under the base. 2. Rotate the objectives carefully. Do not allow them to touch the stage or anything placed on the stage. This can damage the lens.

4 Rules for the Microscope
3. Always start with the lowest power objective, 4x (red), then focus at the higher powers. 4. If you have difficulty focusing an object, return to 4x power and start over.

5 5. When using the coarse focus knob, begin with the stage in the highest position and then lower the stage down to focus. 6. Turn the light off and set the microscope to low power (shortest objective) when you are done.

6 What’s my power? 7. To calculate the power of magnification, multiply the power of the ocular lens by the power of the objective. What are the powers of magnification for each of the objectives we have on our microscopes?

7 Comparing Powers of Magnification
8. We can see better details with higher powers of magnification, but we cannot see as much of the image. Which of these images would be viewed at a higher power of magnification?
