1 M5 – IB Design Unit Title – Sustainable Design Teacher – Mr Gill

2 Part A - Inquiring and Analyzing

3 Identifying the Problem
What is pollution? How does it affect people and the environment? What is recycling? Why is it important to recycle? Explain what ‘sustainable design’ is. Give one example of how sustainable design has been used to help with a problem in real life How can sustainable design be used to help a person/group you know (the client) solve a problem?

4 Point of Research/Question Importance (High, Med, Low) & Reason
Research Plan What information do you need to help you complete this project? Think of questions you need to answer before you can design and create an effective solution. Point of Research/Question Primary /Secondary Importance (High, Med, Low) & Reason

5 Point of Research/Question Summary (What did you find out?)
Research Summary List your research questions in the table below. Write a brief summary explaining what you learned from your research. Point of Research/Question Summary (What did you find out?)

6 Research References For each point of research you must give the source of information for your answers. Use Harvard referencing to create your references. Point of Research/Question Reference (

7 Research Part 2 – Existing Products
Look for 4 examples of a products made using sustainable design. Your examples MUST be similar to the one you want to make i.e. if you want to make a clock, look for examples of devices that tell the time (Wall clock, watch, desk clock, etc) Paste a picture of each example you find Say what the product is and what recycled materials it uses Explain the strengths of the design Explain the weaknesses of the design How can you improve the design? Is the product dangerous in anyway? (i.e. sharp edges)

8 Existing Product 1 Picture of the product Strengths Weaknesses
What is it? What recycled materials is it made from? Opportunity (How can you improve the design?) Threats (Dangers of the design)

9 Existing Product 2 Picture of the product Strengths Weaknesses
What is it? What recycled materials is it made from? Opportunity (How can you improve the design?) Threats (Dangers of the design)

10 Existing Product 3 Picture of the product Strengths Weaknesses
What is it? What recycled materials is it made from? Opportunity (How can you improve the design?) Threats (Dangers of the design)

11 Existing Product 4 Picture of the product Strengths Weaknesses
What is it? What recycled materials is it made from? Opportunity (How can you improve the design?) Threats (Dangers of the deisgn)

12 Design Brief What are you going to make for this project?
Why is this product needed? Who are you making it for (target audience)? Why? Based on you research, what tools and materials you will use to make your product? Based on your research, what design features you would help make your product successful? What are the most important features that would make your product effective? Why do you think this?

13 Part 2 – Developing Ideas

14 Design Specification Write a designs specification for your product. Complete the table below. List your success criteria and say why each one is important. Use these 2 sections: Goals – What must your product do? Design – What will you product look like? What materials will you use? Requirement Reason for inclusion Goals: Design:

15 Design Idea 1 Create 3 design sketches for your product. Label them to explain: What each part is What materials are being used Why you are using certain materials/colors/shapes etc Use a SCANNER to SCAN your designs and add them to your work. PUT YOUR NAME AND CLASS ON EACH DESIGN!

16 Add a scan of design 2 here
Design Idea 2 Add a scan of design 2 here

17 Add a scan of design 3 here
Design Idea 3 Add a scan of design 3 here

18 Choosing my Final Design
a= Meets my design specification x =Does not meet my design specification Requirements Design 1 Design 2 Design 3 Score I will chose design _____ to create as my final product.

19 Part C - Creating the Solution

20 Process (How you will do it)
Project Plan Fill in the table below. Make a list of steps you need to complete to create your website Write how you will complete each step Write how much time you think each step will take and explain why you think you will need this time? Explain why you had to change the process or why you needed more/less time than planned in the comments column Step (What you will do) Process (How you will do it) Planned time & Reason Comments

21 Design Journal Make your product
Create a video showing how you made your product Your product must work! Show your product being used When you are ready put your video on this page The video should: Show you making the product and explain each step you took – use text between scenes Act as a set of instructions for other students Be between 2-3 minutes long Resize the examples and press play to watch.

22 Present your finished product using photos here.
My Finished Product Present your finished product using photos here.

23 My Plan vs My Final Product
What did you change? Why?

24 Part D - Evaluation

25 Testing Pan List the success requirements of your product design (copy and paste from your design specification). For each one explain how you will test it to make sure your design meets the requirement. Requirement How will you test it?

26 Testing - Feedback Table
Ask your classmates to give you feedback by testing your room design. Record their feedback in the table below. Requirement Client 1 Client 2 Client 3 Client 4 Client 5 Client 6 Client 7 Client 8

27 Testing - What did you learn from your tests?
Choose 2 questions from your questionnaire Use the information you gathered to create a chart showing the responses from your chosen questions Add a sentence for each one explaining what data is being shown

28 Thinking About Improvements Changes I would like to make to my product
Look at the feedback from your questionnaire Think about what you like and don’t like about your product Explain what changes you would like to make if you had more time Changes I would like to make to my product Reason for change

29 Conclusion – Impact on the Audience
Testing Conclusion – Impact on the Audience Do you think your product was successful and solved the problem? Why? What do you think will happen after people have seen your design/used your product? Explain why you think this. Ideas – Will people think or act differently? Will peoples lives/the world change in any way?
