1 You should hand in… Smart Materials Challenge 1: (level 3-4)
Name: Form: Tech group: Smart Materials Situation: Smart Materials react to the world around them without need for human intervention – for example they can change colour in sunlight, with heat, with moisture etc. Challenge 1: (level 3-4) Design a new children's fabric toy which could help them to learn – think about different colours of fabric, different textures, squeakers, rattles etc. Your toy must be fun, creative and interactive. Challenge 2: (level 5-7) You have been asked to design a new children's fabric toy, which uses Smart Materials in the design or decoration. Your final design should have a clear target market, use 1 or more Smart Materials and must be fun, creative and interactive. You should hand in… Any research you have gathered (what fabric toys are currently available) Your design (coloured and labelled clearly, explaining how each feature works) Evaluation (written in full sentences) Success criteria Teacher assessment Level 4 Designed a fun, creative and imaginative fabric toy suitable for children. Labelled all features of the toy. Colour rendered neatly. Evaluated your design simply. Level 5 Used Smart Materials in the design of your toy. Labelled all features of the toy in detail. Colour rendered neatly using a range of techniques. Evaluated your design clearly and in detail. Level 6 Researched Smart Materials independently. Designed a fun, creative, unique and imaginative fabric toy suitable for children. Used a range of Smart Materials in the design of your toy. Labelled all features of the toy in detail, explain how they work Evaluated your design clearly and in detail, considering your client. Level 7 Researched Smart Materials independently (not copied and pasted!). Designed a fun, creative, unique and imaginative fabric toy suitable for a specific target group of children. Shown different views of your toy, sketched in a clear and professional manner. Evaluated your design thoroughly, giving specific and detailed suggestions for development considering your client at all times.

2 Some ideas to get you going...
Smart Materials With photochromic materials, the pigments change colour when exposed to UV light – this can be seen in the models dress (which changes colour) and the t-shirt design. UV light can also be shone from torches or lights. Phosphorescent With phosphorescent materials, the pigments absorb light, which then glow in darkness. This is often used on the hands of a watch (so you can see the time in the dark). Here you can see how the picture of the owl changes in darkness. Photochromic Thermochomic With thermochromic pigments the colour changes when in contact with heat, so the mug changes to reveal a different design when the hot drink is poured in, the t-shirt and phone change with the heat of a hand, and the pan changes colour/ design when it gets up to the desired temperature. Some example fabric toys… Remember to research your own source of inspiration!

3 Product:_________________________ Target Market:___________________
Draw and label your design below, don’t forget to label and add colour.

4 Evaluation: Explain who your fabric toy design is aimed at (target market) giving reasons. Be specific. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ If you have used a Smart Materials within your design, which have you used and why? Explain in detail. What are the strengths of your design? Explain why/how. What are the weaknesses? Explain why/how. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ How could your design been improved further? Be specific.
