2 Fruit begins as sugar and water
Concentration Concentrated Solution A lot of solute in a certain amount of solvent. Dilute Solution A little bit of solute in a certain amount of solvent. Fruit begins as sugar and water Water is removed from the fruit to make a more concentrated solution (named “concentrate”) Water is then added to the “concentrate” to make a less concentrated fruit juice

3 Measuring Concentration
To measure concentration you need to know: Amount of Solute Amount of Solvent We talk about concentration as a percentage.

“What You Need to Make. . .” Where does maple syrup come from? Do trees produce a lot of this solution? How much of this solution do you need? Can we solve for the concentration of maple syrup? “Turning Sap into Syrup” What do you have to do to the solution? What chemically is happening? What physically is happening? Are you making the solution more concentrated or more dilute? How?

5 Solubility Solubility is the measure of how much solute can dissolve in a solvent at a given temperature. Unsaturated Solution: You can continue to dissolve solute into the solvent. Saturated Solution: You’ve added too much! No more solute will dissolve.
