Definition: The time before there was writing. To study prehistory, historians rely on the work of archaeologists and anthropologists. An artifact from prehistory.

3 Hominid Definition: An early ancestor of humans.
She and her husband, Louis Leakey, believed that the bones belonged to an early hominid. An early hominid.

4 Ancestor Definition: A relative who lived in the past.
In fact, the bones belonged to an Australopithecus, one of the earliest ancestors of humans. One of our early ancestors hunting.

5 Tool Definition: A handheld object that has been modified to help a person accomplish a task. To help in their studies, archaeologists divide the Stone Age into three periods based on the kinds of tools used at the time. Some of the tools used in ancient times.

6 Paleolithic Era Definition: The first part of the Stone Age.
The Paleolithic Era lasted until about 10,000 years ago. A picture of hunters from the Paleolithic Era.

7 Society Definition: A community of people who share a common culture.
As early humans developed tools and new hunting techniques, they formed societies. An example of an early society.

8 Hunter-Gatherers Definition: People who hunt animals and gather wild plants, seeds, fruits, and nuts to survive. Women in hunter-gatherer societies probably took responsibility for collecting plants to eat. Early hunter-gatherers.
