1 Hace with Expressions of Time
Lesson Objectives: Students will be able to ask and tell how long events have been going on Students will be able to ask and tell how long ago events happened

2 2 Parts… keep them straight!
We will learn: How to ask and tell the duration of events that are still going on AND How to ask and tell the duration of events that are over (i.e. how long ago)

3 Actions that are still happening…
To ask how long an action has been going on: ¿Cuánto tiempo + hace + que + PRESENT TENSE? Remember: These actions are still happening now (up until the present) so we use the PRESENT TENSE! Examples: ¿Cuánto tiempo hace que vives en Delaware? (How long have you been living in Delaware?) ¿Cuánto tiempo hace que Ms. Braun no come carne? (How long has Ms. Braun not been eating meat?)

4 Actions that are still happening…
To answer how long an action has been going on: Hace + time period + que + PRESENT TENSE Remember: These actions are still happening now (up until the present) so we use the PRESENT TENSE! Examples: Hace 5 horas que me duele la rodilla. (My knee has been hurting for 5 hours) Hace 10 años que habla español. (He has been speaking Spanish for 10 years)

Minute - minuto Hour - hora Day - día Week - semana Month - mes Year – año Decade – década Century - siglo

6 REMEMBER…. Just because the English translation has “Been” does not mean it gets translated. Just because the English translation has an “-ing” does not mean it gets a progressive. USE THIS FORMAT: ¿Cuánto tiempo + hace + que + PRESENT TENSE? Hace + time period + que + PRESENT TENSE

7 SELF CHECK How long has your back been hurting?

To ask how long AGO an action occurred use: ¿Cuánto tiempo + hace + que + PRETERITE TENSE? Remember: These actions are over/done/completed so we use the PRETERITE TENSE. Examples: ¿Cuánto tiempo hace que fuiste a Florida? (How long ago did you go to Florida?) ¿Cuánto tiempo hace que se cayó? (How long ago did he/she fall?)

9 Actions that are done/over…
To answer how long ago an action occurred use: Hace + time period + que + PRETERITE TENSE Remember: These actions are still done/over/completed so we use the PRETERITE TENSE! Examples: Hace un año que vi a mi bisabuela. (I saw my great-grandmother 1 year ago) Hace 8 semanas que ellos comieron dulces. (They ate sweets 8 weeks ago)

10 REMEMBER…. Just because the English translation has “Ago” does not mean it gets translated. USE THIS FORMAT: ¿Cuánto tiempo + hace + que + PRETERITE TENSE? Hace + time period + que + PRETERITE TENSE
