1. OPPORTUNITIES to get involved in physical activity (ROLES)
There are a number of different roles available for people wanting to get involved in physical activity. The most obvious role is that of a player/performer. Other roles that we need to know about are official, leadership (coach/manager) and volunteer We need to know what skills the different roles require AND why people might do certain roles. Roles, Initiatives & Pyramid (GCSE PE: Unit 1.1.2)

2. Sports PARTICIPATION PYRAMID
The participation pyramid is a method for showing how many people are taking part in sport at the different levels. There are 4 levels that we need to know: elite (Mr Yates the basketball professional), performance, participation and foundation (Mr Drake the dead, Hayes canal, fisherman). We need to know what each level represents AND sporting examples of people at each level. Roles, Initiatives & Pyramid (GCSE PE: Unit 1.1.2)

2. Sports PARTICIPATION PYRAMID
1) Foundation: this is the base of the pyramid. Performers found here have the lowest level of skill. The FOUNDATION level contains the most people. It is compulsory for school children (PE lessons). It is about learning new skills and introducing people to new sports. 2) Participation: this is the second tier of the pyramid. Performers found here play sport regularly. The PARTICIPATION level contains people who have chosen to take part in sport. Performers here will play for school teams or for teams outside of school. 3) Performance: this is the third tier of the pyramid. Performers found here play sport, competitively, at a good standard. The PERFORMANCE level contains people who play in county/district level leagues. Performers here need quality coaching and the aim of this level is to develop talent. 4) Elite: this is the top tier of the pyramid. Performers found here have the highest skill level. The ELITE level contains professional and top-level performers. Performers here are at the top of their sports and are extremely skilful and talented. 3. Sports INITIATIVES Sports initiatives are schemes run by organisations (usually the government) that aim to push people up the participation pyramid. The main aims are to provide opportunities for people to become involved, remain involved or progress in physical activity. We need to know a few different sport initiatives as well as their main aims. Roles, Initiatives & Pyramid (GCSE PE: Unit 1.1.2)

3. Sports INITIATIVES 1) Youth Sport Trust (YST): an independent charity that aims to increase physical activity in schools and increase competitive sporting opportunities. The YST has three main initiatives: TOP Programme: creates chances for people aged 18 months – 18 years to become involved in physical activity in ALL the different roles (performers, leaders, officials and volunteers). TOP Link Sports Leaders Award: aimed at year olds. It allows students to organise and run sports events for local primary schools. The main aim is to develop young sports leaders. Sports Leaders Award: aimed at year olds. It trains people to act as volunteer leaders (coaches) or officials for primary school children. 2) Sport England: a government agency that is responsible for the delivery of all sport in England. Sport England funds all Nationals Governing Bodies (NGBs). Sport England has one main initiative: Start, Stay, Succeed: Start: increase participation ins port. Stay: retain people in sport through the funding of sports clubs and coaches. Succeed: create opportunities for talented performers to reach the top level. Roles, Initiatives & Pyramid (GCSE PE: Unit 1.1.2)

3. Sports INITIATIVES 3) National Governing Bodies: these are funded by Sport England and are in charge of the development and delivery of a particular sport. For example, the Football Association (FA) are in charge of football in England. NGBs often have initiatives – although these are focused on their particular sport. They look to increase: The number of performers at the FOUNDATION level (to increase the chances of finding a talented player) OR The number of performers at the ELITE level (to achieve national success and promote their sport) Roles, Initiatives & Pyramid (GCSE PE: Unit 1.1.2)

3. Sports INITIATIVES Sports Initiatives can be confusing but the most important thing to remember is that they have similar aims: They want to increase participation SO people can improve their health and fitness. This makes the nation healthier. (They do this BY providing local, cheap, activities and facilities). They want to keep people playing sport SO that they take on different roles. (They do this BY improving sports clubs/teams and creating opportunities to train/develop in different roles). They want to increase sporting success SO that the nation wins more medals and trophies. (They do this BY identifying talented players and providing better coaching/facilities). Roles, Initiatives & Pyramid (GCSE PE: Unit 1.1.2)
