2 # 8 – Martin Van Buren First President born in the United States of America (after the revolutionary War) Attended Kinderhook Academy At the age of 14 he began to study law. At age 21 he was admitted to the bar. (lawyer) 1807: Hannah Hoes. : Attorney General of New York : U.S. Senator from New York

3 # 8 – Martin Van Buren : Jackson appoints him as Secretary of State. : Vice President of the U.S. during Jackson’s second term. : elected 8th Pres. Of the US

4 #8 – Van Buren 1837: Panic of People begin to panic and exchange their paper money for gold and silver. Banks run out of money and go out of business. 90% of all businesses fail in the east. Known as “Martin Van Ruin” – blamed for the recession. Although it was Jackson who destroyed the Bank of the US. Unable to run a second term.

5 # 8 – Martin Van Buren 1841: tries to run for re-election but loses.
Tries to run for President in 1844 but is defeated. 1848: Tries to run for President again, but failed. 1855: retires in Kinderhook, New York July 24, 1862: Dies of natural causes, brought on by asthma.

6 Interesting Facts: 1837: Panic of Recession and depression 1839: 10 hour work day is established. 1839: vulcanized rubber invented- Charles Goodyear 1839 – on paper photography created- William Fox, England. 1840: Underground railroad organized. No states admitted
