1 Name: September 4, 2012 Do Now Do Now (3-2-1): Regarding student management, consider 3 things that you would like to change about the building, 2 things that you would like to change about the atmosphere of your classroom and 1 thing that you think the school does well and should keep doing? Note: There are plenty of good things that go on in classrooms and throughout the building, our goal today is to focus on things that we can improve upon. 5-10 minutes (Including the share out).

2 STUDENT MANAGEMENT & BASIC PROCEDURES

3 Arrival Procedures Students should arrive to school by 8:00
Students are officially late by 8:10 All late students will report to the boy’s cafeteria to receive a late slip until 8:30. Students who report to school after 8:30 will enter through the main entrance and report to the main office. Students who report to school after 9:30 (without a parent or excused from school letter) will enter through the main entrance, report to the main office, and be picked up by parent liaison/lead/dean. Mandatory parent conference the following day. (Please adhere to the school-wide infraction and consequence policy for late to school violations.) 3 minutes

4 Student Arrival Directions: Each group will use the provided chart paper to create a T-chart that will depict what our students’ arrival should look and sound like. You will have 6 minutes to complete this activity and each group will have 1 minute to share out. Looks Like? Sounds Like? 10 minutes

5 Student Arrival Looks Like? Sounds Like?
All staff is ready and in position for student arrival every morning at 8:00 AM. Hey Mr. V.! Can you please greet the students at the stairwell? (Everyone holds each other accountable!) All staff greet students at their doorways and in the hallway. Good Morning Shaiheem. Hoodies, cell phones and backpacks in your locker. HR doors are closing in 4 minutes. All staff reinforcing the school’s code of conduct. Make sure your personal items are stowed in your locker. Remember, no outside food or drink is permitted in the building. I can hold your sandwich until lunch. All staff monitoring students during breakfast and while they are at their lockers by ensuring that once students enter HR they stay in HR. Students eat their breakfast while seated at their desks in this school. Regina, can you help Kelce with her locker please? 5 minutes

6 Absent from school / Truancy
Basic Steps Contact Parent & Document (by: teacher) Record the date as an illegal absence (by: main office & teacher) Referral to parent liaison ? (by: teacher, lead, anyone) Parent Conference (RTI is mandatory) (by: lead teacher, parent liaison , counselor) Refer to Truancy Court (by: Student Advisor, Counselor) 2.5 minutes

7 LOCKERS Students are allowed to use their lockers: During arrival time
Before Lunch Dismissal Before Expressive Arts Students should keep their belongings in their lockers. This includes: Book bags (Purses/pocketbooks) Coats/Hats Lunches Hooded clothing Cell phone and electronic devices Personals 2.5 minutes (Please adhere to the school-wide infraction and consequence policy for locker violations.)

8 Locker Implementation
Looks Like? Sounds Like? Students at their lockers before homeroom, before lunch and at dismissal. HR doors are closing in 4 minutes. Remember to bring all of your things for the morning classes! Students at their lockers before gym. You have 1 minute and 30 seconds before our class walks down to gym. Students keeping their hands and feet to themselves and teachers reinforcing this. Robert, thank you for keeping your hands to yourself and making it to lunch on time. Students knowing their combinations and keeping them to themselves. What’s your locker number? I’m not sharing that with you because my valuables are safely locked in there. 5 Minutes (40 total so far)

I’m not sharing that with you because my valuables are safely locked in there. Directions: Pair up with someone at your table. Describe 1 reason why implementing lockers might be difficult. Then, switch your logistical problem with another group and offer a solution for each other’s problem. We will then share out. 10 Minutes (50 total so far)

10 Shaw Uniform The school uniform consist of the following:
Navy blue polo shirt (w/ Shaw logo), Khaki pants, skirt and/or jumper. Students are not allowed to wear: Muscle shirts, undershirts, oversize shirts, jeans, hats, headbands, open-toe shoes, scarves, and excessive jewelry. 5 minutes (Please adhere to the school-wide infraction and consequence policy for uniform violations.)

11 Student Uniforms Directions: With your table, create a T-chart that lists your examples and non-examples of appropriate Shaw school uniform. Then choose a group member to share out. Examples Non Examples 10 minutes (1 H 5 M)

13 LATE TO CLASS/CUTTING CLASS
If student’s do not arrive to class in a timely (2 minute after class has started) manner, please adhere to the following: Call the office or alert an adult in the hallway with a walkie-talkie/communicator. Document the lateness/cut in your role book. Fill out a cut slip and place it in the student’s file. (Please allow late students to enter the class) (Please adhere to the school-wide infraction and consequence policy for late to class/cutting violations.)

14 Please Meet and Greet your students.
WHY? It increases the hallway supervision/monitoring. Minimizes cutting, lateness, fights, arguments, & etc….. in the hallway Reduces transition time.

15 JUNK FOOD Junk food is not permitted in the building under any circumstances. Junk food will be confiscated and placed in the trash.

16 HALL PASS/BATHROOM POLICY
Students are not to be in the hall without a pass. The procedures are as follows: 1. Students are not allowed out of class during the first ten minutes or the last ten minutes of class. 2. Every student must use a hall pass. 3. Only one student should be authorized to leave class at a time.

17 Please Meet and Greet your students.
ESCORTING STUDENTS TEACHERS are responsible for escorting/monitoring their classes in a quiet and orderly manner during: - Dismissal (Please escort your class to the appropriate exit) - To lunch (If possible, please escort your class to lunch. Students will be escorted to classes after lunch. All teachers are required to meet and greet their class after lunch) To & from expressive arts Fire Drills Field Trips . Please Meet and Greet your students.

18 Cell Phones/Electronic Devices
Cell Phone Policy WE SEE IT WE TAKE IT No Warnings. Students should place all electronic devices in their lockers or voluntarily turn them in to the office/lead/dean. First Offense: The device will be confiscated by the staff member, labeled, and given to an administrator. The parent will be notified and the device will be returned to parent on Wednesday’s or Friday’s.    Second Offense: The device will be confiscated by the staff member, labeled, and given to an administrator. A mandatory conference will be held with the parent/guardian and disciplinary actions will be imposed (detention, community service, etc.). Any future offenses will result in the device being confiscated and a meeting arranged with the parent/guardian to discuss further disciplinary action for willful disobedience and possible Out-of-School Suspension.
