1 Digestive System By: Megan Phung

2 Parts of the digestive system and what they do
Mouth-A visible part of your digestive system that is the first to break down food and include your teeth, tongue, and your saliva. Esophagus-A smooth long tube that transfers food from your mouth to your stomach Liver-An organ that produces a yellow and bitter liquid called bile that is used in the small intestine to break down food even more Pancreas-A small organ that that produces insulin which unlocks cell doors so glucose can go to the cell and be used as energy the body can use Stomach-an organ that uses chemical and muscles to break down food even more Small intestine-A small intestine that uses chemicals from the liver and pancreas to break down food and absorbs nutrients into Villi Large intestine-A large intestine that absorbs water and is the place where feces are formed Gallbladder-An organ that stores bile that the liver makes. Bile is a liquid substance that breaks up fat particles and contains special salts. It is possible to survive without their gallbladder.

3 Chemical and Mechanical digestion
Chemical digestion- the chemical digestion parts of the body are the liver, pancreas, stomach, and small intestine. These are the parts you can’t control. Mechanical digestion- your mechanical parts of your digestive system are parts that you can control like your mouth.

4 Where nutrients get digested
The nutrients get digested in the liver and small intestine. The liver makes bile which is a substance made of chemicals and processes nutrients and breaks down fat. This substance gets stored in the gallbladder and the gallbladder releases it into the small intestine when needed.

5 Digested food to the blood stream
The digest food gets in to the blood steam when it is absorbed into the villi that lines the small intestine. In the small intestine bile, a substance that comes from the liver separates the toxic waste and nutrients.

6 The liver and the pancreas
Liver- A important organ that makes bile which breaks down fat molecules to smaller molecules. The liver also process and separates nutrients. I t filters waste for blood and body, and also regulates your blood sugar level so you stay healthy. Pancreas-An organ that makes enzymes and insulin. The enzymes get to the small intestine by going through the pancreatic duct, that is where the enzymes kelp break down carbohydrates, fats, proteins, and gives off alkaline solution that neutralizes acid in your stomach. This organ is also part of the endocrine system. In that system it produces hormones like insulin which keeps the blood sugar level balanced.

7 Problems and diseases Some problems you can have if your digestive system does not work properly is Diabetes. Diabetes is a disease that occurs when the pancreas either stops making insulin or something is wrong with the insulin causing it to over work the pancreas. Type 1 diabetes is when the pancreas dies and there is no insulin to unlock the cells so glucose can’t get in so we loose energy and then die.

8 Vocabulary Digestion- A way that body breaks down food, receives nutrients and filters out waste that harms that human body Saliva-A liquid chemical that your mouth produces that moistens food to make it easier for your teeth to break down food. Salivary Glands- Small sacks behind your tongue that produce saliva Epiglottis-a muscle that opens and closes to stop food that goes down your esophagus from going back up Esophagus- a long tube made of smooth muscle which carries food and goes from your mouth to your stomach Stomach- an organ that uses chemicals to break down food more and is connected to the esophagus and the small intestine Liver-an organ that produces a chemical that is used in the small intestine to sort out nutrients from waste Gallbladder- stores bile that the liver makes and releases it to the small intestine when needed, you can survive without your gallbladder Small Intestine- an intestine that uses chemicals to break down food from the stomach and absorbs nutrients Large Intestine-An intestine that absorbs water and makes feces Villi-small hair like things in the small intestine Bile-a fluid that contains special salts and breaks up fat from food
