3. PPE
In addition to your uniform (if provided), Ruan requires the following six items to be worn by all flatbed drivers anytime you are on duty and not driving:
Hard hat
Long pants
Safety vest or approved hi-visibility shirt
Safety-toe boots with internal metatarsal protection
Gloves
Safety glasses
Also - Any Customer Specific Additional Requirements – e.g. Hearing Protection

4. REMEMBER – Securement Guidelines – The Ruan Way
Minimum of two forms of securement per item
2 forms in front / 2 in back / 1 every 10 feet – regardless of bulkhead
Enough chains / straps to account for 100 percent of the load’s weight
If a securement device is missing the stamp or tag, it is OOS
Bungees are not cargo securement devices – only tarp tie downs
Ruan equipment load limits:
4 inch strap – 5000
2 inch strap – 3000
3/8 chain – 6000
5/16 chain- 4500

6. Pre Trip
Follow the operators daily check list, look for damage on the following items:
The unit
Power cord
Tires
Forks
Control arms
Be sure to document any damage to the unit and do not proceed if it is unsafe
Damage to the power cord will result in no lighting to the unit during travel

7. Un-mounting Forklift
Disengage pigtail from donkey
Remove chains or trailer binders
Flip the safety locks to the open position
Lower forks (this will raise the wheels off of the wheel bases)
Extend forks (this will move the forklift away from the trailer)
Raise the forks (this will lower the forklift to the ground
Back slowly away from the trailer until forks clear the trailer

8. Always be sure to clear the area around your unit before unloading
Picking up a load
Square up to the center of the load
Lower stabilizer
Stop with the tip of the forks approximately one foot from the load
Level forks and move forward slowly until the load touches the carriage
Lift the load slowly and smoothly until it clears the trailer
Tilt the mast back to stabilize the load
Back slowly looking over both shoulders to clear surroundings
Raise stabilizer
Once clear of trailer lower load to travel height
Always be sure to clear the area around your unit before unloading

9. Traveling
Maintain a safe speed
Watch for warning signs, load limits, and over head clearances
Keep arms and legs inside forklift
Slow down before cornering
Travel with load facing uphill on ramp or incline
Stop smoothly
Always sound horn before cornering, or in a congested area

10. Mounting to a Truck
Raise forks until they match up with trailer
Extend forks
Drive slowly into fork pockets
Tilt mast back fully (rear wheels will be off the ground)
Retract forks to pull unit into the trailer
Raise forks to lower wheels onto pads
Attach chains or binders
Tighten by tilting mast forward
Connect power cord for lights

11. Always Put Safety First
Be sure to use 3 POC when climbing onto equipment
Remember to wear your seatbelt at all times
