2 Objective The Big Idea How did voting rights and suffrage expand?
How were Jackson and Adams different? What were the results of the election of 1824 & 1828?

3 Expanding Democracy in the 1820s
America changed fast in the early 1800s. Wealth was concentrated among fewer people. Many ordinary Americans believed the wealthy were tightening their grip on power in the United States. “The rich got richer” Small farmers, frontier settlers, and slaveholders backed Andrew Jackson in the election of 1828. They believed he would defend the rights of common people and the slave states.

4 Voting Reforms Democracy spread in the early 1800s as more people became active in politics. Democratic reform made voting reform possible. Many states lowered or eliminated the property ownership requirement for men to be eligible to vote. Political parties held nominating conventions, which allowed party members, not just leaders, to select candidates. This led to more voters especially voters from the lower classes

8 Election of 1824 the “Corrupt Bargain”
Four candidates – -John Quincy Adams (NE) - Henry Clay (West) -Andrew Jackson( West) -William Crawford (South) Jackson won the popular vote but lost the election to Adams (decided by the House of Representatives) Jackson accused John Quincy Adams and Henry Clay of making a “corrupt bargain” and stealing the election from Jackson

John Quincy Adams represented the National Republicans (Whigs) Jackson’s victory seen as a win for the common people
