1 Answer the warm-up on a clean sheet of notebook paper.
Friday – 4/7 Answer the warm-up on a clean sheet of notebook paper. We mentioned that plants have 2 body systems (roots and shoots). How many body systems do you think humans have? Name as many as you can.

2 Levels of Organization:
All organisms are made of cells. Most cells are organized into functional units called tissues. The four basic tissues of the human body are: epithelial, muscle, connective, and nervous tissues.

3 Levels of Organization:
Organs are groups of tissues that perform specialized jobs. examples of organs are: eyes and stomach A group of organs that work together to carry out a major life function is called an organ system.

4 Levels of Organization:
CELLS TISSUE ORGAN ORGAN SYSTEM

5 PUT ON NOTES SHEET Levels of Organization:
All organisms are made of ______________________. Most cells are organized into functional units called _________________. The four basic tissues of the human body are: epithelial, ___________, connective and nervous. _______________ are groups of tissues that perform specialized jobs. Examples are lungs and heart. A group of organs that work together to carry out major life functions is called an ___________________.  Cells Tissues Organs Organ Systems

6 11 Body Systems

7 Body Systems Notes Look at the Body Systems Summary Sheet.
Take 2 minutes to familiarize yourself with the systems you still might not remember.

8 Circulatory Major structure: heart and blood vessels
Function: transports nutrients, wastes, hormones, and gases

9 Digestive Major structures: mouth, throat, esophagus, stomach, liver, pancreas, small and large intestines Function: extract and absorbs nutrients from blood; removes wastes; maintains water and chemical balances

10 Endocrine System Major structures: hypothalamus, pituitary, pancreas and many other endocrine glands Function: regulates body temperature, metabolism, development, and reproduction; maintains homeostasis; regulates other organ systems

11 Excretory System Major structures: Kidneys, urinary bladder, ureters, urethra, skin lungs Function: removes wastes from blood, regulates concentration of body fluids

12 Immune System Major structures: white blood cells, lymph nodes, and vessels, skin Function: defends against pathogens and disease

13 Integumentary System Major structures: skins, nails, hair
Function: protects against pathogens and disease

14 Muscular System Major structures: skeletal, smooth, and cardiac muscle tissue Function: moves limbs and trunk, moves substances through body, provides structure and support

15 Nervous System Major structures: brain spinal cord, nerves, sense organs Function: regulates behavior; maintains homeostasis; regulates other organ systems; controls sensory and motor functions

16 Reproductive System Major structures: testes, penis (in male); ovaries, uterus, breasts (in female) Function: produces gametes and offspring

17 Respiratory System Major structures: lungs, nose, mouth, trachea
Function: moves air into and out of lungs; controls gas exchange between blood and lungs

18 Skeletal System Major structures: bones and joints
Function: protects and supports the body and organs; interacts with skeletal muscles, produces red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets

19 Practice Makes Perfect
Different scenarios will appear on the screen one slide at a time. Use the clues that are bolded to identify ALL of the systems that are at play in each scenario. Circle them on your plastic sleeve and flip it over once you have finished.

20 Scenario #1 While running, you begin to breathe heavier and faster to supply cells with oxygen. Muscular Respiratory Circulatory Nervous

21 Scenario #2 After playing soccer, you feel hot, tired, and you are sweating. Nervous Integumentary

22 Scenario #3 A sign of infection is high fever and swollen lymph nodes. Lymphatic/Immune Nervous Circulatory

23 Scenario #4 Food molecules are broken down into smaller molecules to be absorbed and distributed to different body cells. Digestive Circulatory Nervous

24 Scenario #5 The kidneys filter waste products from the blood. Excretory Circulatory Nervous

25 Scenario #6 Testosterone stimulates development of male secondary sex characteristics. Endocrine Reproductive Nervous

26 The bone marrow produces blood cells. Skeletal Circulatory Nervous
Scenario #7 The bone marrow produces blood cells. Skeletal Circulatory Nervous

27 Monday 4/10 Use a new sheet of notebook paper to complete your warm-ups for the week. Remember: plants had 3 functions – do you remember what they were? Transport Response Reproduction How many functions do you think animals have? Tutoring Sign-up: Remember if you need tutoring on the following topics, sign-up for the appropriate session before you leave today. Tuesday: Wednesday:

28 Functions of the Body Nutrient Absorption Defense from Injury/Illness Reproduction Regulation

29 Homeostasis Do you remember what does homeostasis means?
A state of internal balance Brainstorm with your shoulder partner: What are some of the things that need to be balanced in our bodies? How does the concept of homeostasis relate to the 4 body functions?

30 Homeostasis What are some of the things that need to be balanced in our bodies? Sugar, Water, Temperature, Oxygen, etc. How does the concept of homeostasis relate to the 4 body functions? Our bodies are constantly performing the 4 functions until homeostasis is reached. Make sure you given the thermostat analogy. When you set the thermostat, your AC or heater automatically kicks on until the temperature that was set is reached. Same with the refrigerator, etc.

31 Video Scenarios For each video clip, you will attempt to determine which body system is being demonstrated. You will get to discuss your answer with your partner before I will call on someone to share their answer with the class.

36 Scenario Practice

37 Tuesday – 4/11 Which of the 4 body functions do you think is the most important? Be sure to explain your reasoning. Nutrient Absorption Regulation Defense from Injury/Illness Reproduction Tutoring Sign-up: Remember if you signed up for tutoring today after school, make sure you report to the appropriate room by 3:00pm.

38 Directions Use your sleeve to answer each scenario:
Circle ALL OF THE SYSTEMS that are being used Circle the FUNCTION that is being demonstrated Flip it over once you have finished.

40 Directions: Part 2 Now that you have familiarized yourself with the scenario, choose the answer that you think is the best response. Write the answer in the box in the bottom right-hand corner of the sleeve. Flip it over once you have finished.
