The act of using supernatural forces to influence the natural world Scientific Revolution Period of time in which significant advancements were made in terms of human understanding of the physical universe

4 How did the social and religious climates in Europe from the 15th through the 17th centuries contribute to the most intense period of witch trials and executions in European history? I will learn about the methods of trial and punishment in cases of alleged witchcraft to understand why women were targeted and persecuted as witches.

5 ACTIVITY Copy the chart on the whiteboard down in your notebooks landscape style Read the handout ‘Witch Trials in Early Modern Europe’ You will have 7 minutes to take notes under each one of the headings REMEMBER: use bullet points and do not write in complete sentences. Note the most pertinent information in the text and move on TIME: 7 minutes

Each group will have a different English law concerning witchcraft between 1564 and 1736 Read silently for 2 minutes and then talk about the main idea(s) in the documents with your table partners Make notes: According to the law, what constitutes witchcraft? What are the punishments for witchcraft? TIME: 15 minutes

On a sheet of paper, write a paragraph (of at least 5 sentences) explaining HOW English common law changed with regard to the practice of witchcraft and WHY you think those changes occurred Remember to avoid using first person point of view (“I”) when offering up your own hypothesis!! Between 40,ooo to 100,000 people suspected of witchcraft lost their lives as a result of vicious rumors, superstition, and jealousy…. THESIS: Turn the prompt into a statement that identifies THREE factors
