2 Day One Hook Exercise Background Reading Document Analysis

3 Hook Exercise Consider the following question: Who is most to responsible for the low graduation rates in American high schools? Write your response. How might parents respond to this question? How might your teachers respond to this question? How might your fellow students respond to this question? Discuss possible responses with a partner.

4 Hook Exercise: Student Handout 1 Record your answers on Student Handout 1. Share out with the class when called on by the teacher.

5 Hook Exercise: Transparency 1 How does the United States see the Soviet Union in the cartoon? How does the Soviet Union see the United States in the cartoon? What point is the cartoonist trying to make?

6 Background Essay: Document 1 Read the quote at the top of the page and think about its meaning. Turn to a partner and talk to them about the quote. Share your ideas about the quote when called on by the teacher. Note how the Background Essay is divided into several sections: Introduction Spheres of Influence Ideology Military Factors

7 Background Essay: Document 1 Read Document 1, The Underlying Causes of the Cold War. As you read highlight, underline, or circle key words or phrases. Make notes or write any questions you may have in the margins.

8 Document Analysis: Document 2 Read Document 2, The “Iron Curtain” Speech. As you read be certain to note the vocabulary support in the left hand column.

9 Document Analysis: Student Handout 2 As you consider Document 2, begin to complete the Student Handout 2: Circle which cause or causes. Write out the key idea and quote directly from the document from both the Western and Soviet perspective.

10 Document Analysis: Document 3 - 5 With a partner or in a small group, continue to analyze Documents 3 – 5. Be certain to complete the section of Student Handout 2 for each of the Documents.

20 Document Analysis: Document 9 Document 9, United States – USSR/Russian Total Strategic Warheads, 1945 – 2002.

21 Document Analysis Review Consider your completed Student Handout 2. Do you have any questions regarding Documents 2 – 9?

22 Preparation for Writing Read Student Handout 3. Focus on the prompt and the writing task at hand. Remember to consider the key terms and vocabulary that should be included in your essay.

23 Preparation for Writing Consider the prompt again: Which side was most responsible for the Cold War—the Soviets or the West? Those of you who believe that the Soviets were more to blame, stand up and come to the front of the classroom. Those of you who believe that the West was more to blame, stand up and go to the back of the classroom.

24 Preparation for Writing With one person from each side of the prompt going at a time, provide evidence to support your position. Remember to cite evidence from the documents that you have been working with.
