1 Muscle Challenge 3 minutes

2 What happens??

3 Muscles Label the diagrams below.
To bend the arm, the following happens; …………………………………. To straighten the arm, the following happens; ………………………………….

4 Two muscles have to work together at a joint.
At each joint a pair of muscles work together to cause movement. These are called antagonistic muscles . When one muscles relaxes the other one contracts.

5 Antagonistic Muscles – Always works in pairs.
Lifting an object up: Your bicep muscles contract and your triceps relax. Making your antagonistic muscle.

6 Muscles - How do they work?
An example is the antagonistic pair of muscles used in bending and straightening the arm. To bend the arm requires one set of muscles – the biceps – to contract, while another set – the triceps – relaxes. What happens when the arms straightens? Extensors (muscles that straighten a limb) Flexors (muscles that bend a limb).

7 Muscles and Joints Lesson Objectives 15th April 2015 Success Criteria
C/W 15th April 2015 Muscles and Joints Success Criteria Lesson Objectives To describe the role of joints in movement. To explain how muscles move the body. List the roles of the skeleton List the roles of the muscles Show how muscles at the arm work by producing a model.

8 Muscles are found all over your body They are a type of tissue.
Muscle cells work together to do the same job and cause movement There are many types of muscle in your body: The heart muscle is made of cardiac muscle tissue. Muscles found in the gut help squeeze food along.

9 Muscles at the arm Cut the bones up using the line as a guide.
Make a hole where the black dots are. Thread the string through the holes, through the matching numbers.

10 What happens??

11 Muscles make the body move by contracting – Getting smaller.
Muscles are attached to bones by tendons. When a muscle contracts, it pulls on a bone. If the bone is part of a joint it will start to move .

14 Muscles in the body How many muscles are there in the body?
What system do muscles belong to? What are the three types of muscle found in the body? What is the function of smooth muscles in the stomach? What is the function of cardiac muscles in the body? What attaches muscle to bones? Name an example of a muscle and its location.

16 1. Place a 1 kg mass in your hand.
2. Lift the mass as many times as possible in 3 minutes. 3. Your hand must always touch the desk at the beginning of each lift. 4. The mass must always touch the shoulder at the end of the lift. 5. Test 1: Record the number of lifts in each minute for 3 minutes without rest. 6. Test 2: Repeat, but take a 30-second rest between each minute. 7. Test 3: Repeat, but take a 1-minute rest between each minute.

17 What is the difference between a ligament and a tendon?
State which test showed the greatest level of fatigue. Describe the pattern in the results from minute 1 to minute 3 with no rest between minutes.  Describe what pattern you observe as you look at the results with increasing rest periods. Challenge Question! What is the difference between a ligament and a tendon?
