STRUCTURES & FUNCTIONS Muscular System

All of the muscles that let you move. An organ system whose primary function is movement and flexibility.

Muscle Action Read all directions and complete the Voluntary vs. Involuntary Muscle Lab

Review Activity Muscles can either be ___________ or ___________. Some can be __________. Meaning? Some muscles work without us trying to move them, while others work only when we want them to move. There are some muscles, however, that can do both. If all muscles rested at the same time, you would collapse! Somewhere in your body, there are always muscles working.

Take a Break! A Resistance Exercise break… Do 5 push ups. Then return to your desk and be ready to listen.

Kinds of Muscle Watch the video and identify and define (in your spiral) the kinds of muscle found in your body. http://kidshealth.org/kid/closet/movies/MSmovie.html?tracking=59983_G

Take a Break! An Aerobic Exercise Break… Jog in place for 30 seconds. Then return to your seat and be ready to listen.

Kinds of Muscle Cardiac Muscle – Only found in the heart! Smooth Muscle – Lines the walls of the digestive tract and blood vessels. Skeletal Muscle – Attached to bones for movement. Open your book to page 12 and draw a picture in your notes of each of the types of muscles.

Take a Break! A Resistance Exercise Break… Pick up a book and do 10 bicep curls. Hold the book with both hands in front of you, bend then straighten your hinge joints (elbows).

Skeletal Muscles Tendons – Attach skeletal muscles to bones. Flexor Muscle – Skeletal muscle that contracts to bend a body part. Extensor Muscle – Skeletal muscle that contracts to straighten a body part The flexor and extensor muscles work together in pairs to move body parts. Example: The biceps muscle contracts to bend your arm, while the triceps muscles relax, and the triceps muscle contracts to straighten your arm, while the biceps muscles relax.

Take a Break! An Aerobic Exercise break… Carefully walk 5 laps around the classroom. Then return to your seat and be ready to listen.

Staying Strong What are the 2 different types of exercise you can do to keep your muscles strong? Can you define each one? (think about the different breaks you have taken throughout today’s lesson) Resistance Exercise – works against weight or resistance to strengthen muscles Aerobic Exercise – moderately intense activity that increases endurance.

Muscular Section Quiz Everyone in your group must answer the question(s) first. Group members can discuss answers and share reasoning for answers until all agree One person will bring the paper to me to find out how many points earned and get feedback from me Take feedback to group, and answers can be changed if needed Repeat steps for next round, but a different person will come up to me
