4. Background – Chemical Hazards & Risk
Hazard refers to the inherent properties of a chemical substance that make it capable of causing harm to a person or the environment.
Exposure describes both the amount of, and the frequency with which, a chemical substance comes into contact with a person, group of people or the environment.
Risk is the possibility of harm arising from a particular exposure to a chemical substance, under specific conditions.

16. Case Studies LEV (Local Exhaust Ventilation) What is LEV?
All such devices are controlled on an annual basis (downdraught tables, fume cupboards, walk-in booth, moveable capturing hood etc.) organized by the HSE Unit.

If the device FAILS the test it must not be used as a control measure until remedial action is taken.

Generally low hazard chemicals, chemical irritants;
Always wear suitable eye and/or face protection when handling chemicals (SCEM No ):

Safety goggles: corrosive liquids, dusts etc.
Safety glasses over prescription glasses
Visor (to be worn over safety goggles): high pressure, large quantities of corrosive liquids
