2014 Youth Forum at SIUE in October Topic: Nutrition and Physical Activity Inside and Outside of school Representatives from most high schools in Mad. County Recommendations brought back to the board Our voted topic of choice: Water consumption inside of schools It had been a couple years since we did one, wanted to begin that process again As a board we selected the topic of nutrition and physical activity Representatives selected by health member (this year it was Mrs. Weller due to topic) 2 hours of discussion, then panels, led to recommendations on topic Recommendations were voted on, topic was water

3 The Madison County Youth Board
Our purpose “Offering adolescents committed to leadership and wellness activities with a voice in a formal structure.” “Involves the implantation of a broad based peer network designed to provide Madison County social, educational, and recreational activities for youth in their community.” “Provide a forum for expressing ideas, solving problems, and doing their part towards establishing a safer, secure county for the youth of today and the future.” A youth group underneath the health department-voice for the teens Strive towards a healthier, safer, community (variety of topics-alcohol to nutrition) Projects such as the anonymous tipline

4 Why Water? Physical and Mental Wellness The Need for Education
Overall Bodily Health Athletes Students The Need for Education Sugary drinks Proper amounts Consequences Physical and Mental Wellness Skin, teeth, hair, digestion, rids of toxins Keeps them hydrated, allows them to perform their best, no dehydration/cramps Memory, focus The Need for Education People aren’t aware in how much theyre consuming Same with the amount of water they SHOULD be consuming And the consequences of not drinking water

5 Our Approach: An Overview
“Water Week” Daily announcements at start of day Daily educational activities during lunch periods ID Scanners for recording participants End of week reward for participation

6 Monday: Awareness Goal: Inform the students about the sugar content in the drinks that they consume. Activity Have students examine empty bottles of various drinks filled with the sugar that they contain Show and explain the “Calculations Key” Show and explain the nutrition label sheets Participation Credit: ID scan upon completion of activity

7 Tuesday: Consequences
Goal: Inform the students of the consequences in drinking or not drinking the daily recommended amount of water. Activity Show and explain the “Benefits of Drinking Water” sheet Show and explain dehydration causes and symptoms Hand out urine charts Participation Credit: ID scan upon completion of activity

8 Wednesday: Goals Goal: Inform the students of certain goals they should try and reach with respect to consuming water. Activity Show and explain “Hydration Guidelines” sheet Show and explain the stoplight system (in regards to drinks) Have students examine the quantity of water that they drink on average relative to what they ideally should be drinking Participation Credit: ID scan upon completion of activity

9 Thursday: Action Goal: Have the students apply what they learned.
Activity “Bring your own bottle of water” Give out cases of water or have students show that they brought their own Participation Credit: ID scan upon showing the board members that they brought a water bottle/taking a water bottle.

10 Friday: Change Goal: Have the students agree to working towards a lifestyle change in water consumption Activity Provide information on a “30 day water challenge” Have students sign pledge Reward: With 3 out of 4 days of completed scans, students will receive a customized refillable water bottle to work towards their lifestyle change.

13 Long Term Goal To add at least one water bottle refill stations to all district schools. Update: School year; two refill stations were added to EHS one station was courtesy of a student written grant, the second EHS Health Occupations Club paid for through fundraising Installation of hydration stations saves water bottles: 1st station main lobby; March- 10/18/16- saved 13,567 2nd C hallway; 4/21/16-10/18/16- saved 6177
