1 The Eumetcal Programme
Alessandro Chiariello Finnish Meteorological Institute

2 This presentation will help you to know more about Eumetcal
Training activities – what we do How we create together with NHMS in and outside Europe (and also other training programs) an advanced and successful training Other arrow was too narrow and out of balance with the rectangular names 2 2

3 ”EUM-” organisations EUMETSAT EUMETSAT EUMETNET EUMeTrain EUMeTrain
I made the rounded rectangles a bit more 3D (PPT 2007 effect) Eumetcal 3

4 Eumetcal staff = Vesa and Alessandro

5 Eumetcal Steering Group gives advice
Eumetcal Steering Group meeting in Vilnius, Lithuania , May 2010 5

6 Idea of Eumetcal was born in late 90’s
EuroMET Phase I Phase II Phase III Jul 2007–Jun 2012 Management: Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI)

7 Eumetcal has now 28 member states and 4 partner institutes

8 Eumetcal gets its funding by Member Contributions
Based on percentage of total budget Percentage based on GNI The current operational phase €/year

9 The objective is to help members with their training needs
Collaboration Trainer network Technological tools Support I think this direction works better as your eye wants to stay on the right of the screen. It follows the arrows here. On the previous one, your eye keeps going to the archer and having to go back again to the text. 9 9

10 Eumetcal Workshop Eumetcal Courses RHMS Contacts with other Experts Eumetcal offers to NMSs several forums… … to collaborate and to get support I don’t think animating the diagram helps. But if you do, a symmetrical version would be better. I changed the shapes to 3D in PPT 2007 and removed the italics (harder to read) and made text bold. Working Groups 10 10

11 Eumetcal Training Workshops

14 Trainers meet at Eumetcal Workshops
Hands-on sessions Pedagogical workshops Exchange of views and experiences Next Eumetcal Workshop: WMO, Geneva Colour picks out the important piece of information. Otherwise you have to hunt for it. 14 14

15 Improving skills of meteorological staff in NMHSs
Climate and Climate Change High Impact Weather Hydro- meteorology Aviation GOALS Forecasting Tools NWP Satellite Radar Training Tools Technical solutions Didactics No focus; animations all happening at once and not adding value/distracting. NEEDS Requirements from NMHSs 15 15

16 Working Groups put it all together
Organise a course Evaluate Eumetcal Working Group Again, 3D effects and use of colour to separate the content Create new resources Identify existing resources 16 16

17 Themed Resource Working Groups

18 Example – radar working group
Wilfried Jacobs (DWD) Martin Hagen (DLR) Bojan Lipovscak(DHMZ) Andreas Schaffhauser (ZAMG) Alessandro Chiariello (FMI) Elena Saltikoff (FMI) Roger Deslandes (BoM) Peter Lang (DWD)

19 Radar working group is active in 2010
Activity 2010 April: Online meeting May: Face-to-face meeting– preparing the next Eumetcal Radar course Radar Course November 2010 – February 2011 Harmonisation with other radar training 2010 : ERAD, MSC Radar course. Meeting in Geneva Nov 2010 19

21 Contacts to other experts improves the training quality
Finding and sharing resources and new innovations Technical advise and tools Help in course planning Wide network of subject matter experts

22 3. Help in course and workshop planning
EUMETSAT MOODLE COURSE MAY 2010 3. Help in course and workshop planning

23 EUMETCAL FLASH COURSE DECEMBER 2009

24 Eumetcal courses are for the members

25 Eumetcal courses are in blended format
Distance learning phase Background knowledge for the classroom phase Independent work Classroom phase Discussion Practical demonstrations Deepening the knowledge Taking the course entirely online has not yet been desirable even though technically entirely possible. This is due to the fact that the eLearning tools are still largely unknown to European NMSs and also students have only little experience in online courses. Taking parts of the course online give the NMSs the opportunity to learn new techniques, introduce new technologies to the students and shorten the time needed for an actual classroom course. 25 25

26 Eumetcal meteorology courses 2010-2011
Radar course (November -> Feb 2011) APPLICATIONS OPEN 2011 Aviation course(s) Satellite course (with EUMeTrain) 26

27 Other courses and events NMS can join through Eumetcal
Technological tools (Moodle, Scenari) Co-operation with EUMeTrain Event week ”Warning Week” in October Co-operation with WMO trainers’ seminar in May in Sibiu, Romania Co-operation with Eumetsat training events Heading now has a verb and an action they can take- ie, reason for the slide Bullet types consistent with previous Spacing between bullets  proximity 27 27
