1 NU «OMA» ERASMUS+ 2016

2 NU «OMA» National University “Odessa Maritime Academy” was accredited by the State Accreditation Board of Ukraine with accreditation level 4 (the highest). September 21, 2002 ONMA was given the National status and the name of the Odessa National Maritime Academy; the Decree of the President of Ukraine № 845/2002. In accordance with the Decree of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine dated June 15, 2015 № 623 and the Decree of President of Ukraine dated August 25, 2015 № 500 Odessa National Maritime Academy (ONMA) was reorganized into National University «Odessa Maritime Academy» (NU «OMA») since January 1, 2016. National University “Odessa Maritime Academy” comprises 4 separate subdivisions: Danube Institute NU ''OMA''; The Seafaring College of Technical Fleet of NU “OMA”; the Maritime College named after O.I. Marinesko of NU «OMA»; Azov Maritime Institute NU ''OMA''. Studies are carried out by more than 800 tutors, researchers and scientists. NU «OMA» is well-known for a long time in the world of marine shipping owing to highly qualified specialists, its graduates, who work at hundreds of shipping companies all over the world.

3 NU «OMA» Project title: EL professional linguistic skills in teaching navigation/ specialty in distant learning mode. Prior linguistic training for subject learning/teaching in distant learning mode Legal Representative: Rector of NU «OMA» Miyusov M.V. Contact person: Head of English language Chair for Navigators Ivasiuk N.A.

4 NU «OMA» Distant learning mode is essential need for seafarers whose voyages and education are often overlapping in time terms. The purpose of the present project is to help to improve the quality of distant learning in the field of maritime studies, navigation through EL learning, in particular. It is aimed to promote adoption, application and use of e-learning of maritime English for non-native speakers, provide and implement IT platform, offering virtual databases for distant learning, creating substantial working packages reflecting IMO model course 3.17 in maritime language but at the same time being constructed as ABC course for studying navigation sciences in EL for non-native speakers- students/cadets of maritime educational institutions.

5 NU «OMA» The idea of creating a virtual lab for studying in distant learning mode different academic subjects is not new but we are going to apply the methods of measuring learning effectiveness reactions of the participants of target groups. We will differentiate general and specific effectiveness of teaching and learning through this closed cycle of pre-navigation linguistic course. We are going not only to implement our new technology but to work out the indicators to measure the effectiveness of immediate and retained learning.

6 NU «OMA» The most important indicators of achievement will be:
- creating a virtual lab for public availability; - developing the learners’ oral and writing abilities, professional skills; - developing language learning in the service of infield interpretation; - creating appropriate curricular integration on the subject - based and language problems; - having unique pedagogical value.

8 NU «OMA» The methodology of the Project research work will be defined by all partners of the consortium. We have already defined the first milestones of the work, such as elaboration of operational chart and operational code of navigators' professional activities, creation of the extended scenario with comprehensive linguistic and professional interpretation of navigation data information. We started to work out the system of linguistic exercises – lexical-stylistic, semantic, etc., phonetic, grammar, which rationally conjugated in the virtual worlds of comparison, alternatives, modality, guesses, hypothesis, possible perspectives, role playing, prescribed actions. The idea is to match the structural parameters of this virtual professional linguistic world with the technological parameters of the Moodle Platform on which basis Virtual Language Lab will be created. The qualitative and quantitative indicators through the test system will be the next stage of our Project.

9 NU «OMA» The project will have direct impact on the participants of the project activities and the participating institution. It will exert the biggest impact on target group present and future ones as for their linguistic readiness for higher standard quality studies in EL navigation sciences. The great labour market on shipping industry will become more open to IMO professional standards, conventional documents which will be more accessible to seafarers, non-native speakers. We expect to make own input into the teaching of maritime professional terminology in EL to maritime cadets and correspondence seafarers in distant learning mode all over the world. All the partners from the consortium will make their input for higher impact of the project based on joint communication and technological platform. The participants’ exchange of crucial ideas on organizing Moodle or other Platform will be performed.

10 NU «OMA» Future seafarers are to have necessary skills of immediate colloquial response in English to react properly in emergency professional situations. The desired impact of the present project is to modernize and develop language learning through the use of distant learning; promote cooperation and partnerships that would help to make language learning more efficient and effective as the lack of language competence is one of the main problems in the maritime field.

11 NU «OMA» Quality assurance, evaluation and monitoring.
Quality assurance of the Project research and practical work is incurred through the elaboration of the integral cognitive model of the whole teaching process in the Virtual Lab. This model is composed of situational models, with discovering the essential factors of them, their assessment and finding out their dependability / interdependence. The participants of the Project will share the responsibilities of developing, evaluating and monitoring the results. These responsibilities will be with three - dimensional indicators. The first – dimensional indicators will concern professional aspect. The second - dimensional indicators will be connected with linguistic parameters. The third – dimensional indicators are connected with the technological parameters.

12 NU «OMA» The expected results, outputs and outcomes will lead to:
creation of a virtual lab, with best practice examples and recommendations, practical guide, training materials for project practitioners.
