Activity 10 – a) Have students look closely at the words in the picture in their booklets on page ___ and provide examples via the chatspace of the positive and or negative attitudes people have towards work as a result of technology (PLEASE NOTE THE SLIDE DEPICTS NEGATIVE ATTITUDES, ENSURE STUDENTS ALSO THINK OF POSSIBLE POSITIVE ATTITUDES AS WELL) Possible responses for 10a greater competition in the workplace lowered job satisfaction due to deskilling workers costs associated with retraining workers higher stress levels due to pressure to perform lack of motivation of workers worker isolation (less face-to-face contact with employees) time consuming especially if workers are not skilled in its use Negative attitudes towards work people having difficulties keeping up with constantly changing technology potential for improved productivity through the use of automated machinery Staff excited to learn new skills Some workers welcome change and technology as it improves productivity and efficiency Some job are now less time consumers making workers feel less stressed Increased motivation due to learning new skills and increased productivity Activity 10 – b) Have students explain how technology has contributed to the attitudes identified in activity 10 a) in their booklets on page ___ Explain this activity in other words so students gain a better understanding of what they are expected to do for the focus question E.g. the cause of the attitude and the effect it has on the attitude of the person OR In other words, E.g. What technology is the cause and what about it has resulted in people having a positive or negative attitude towards work. Possible responses 10b Sending letters/communicating to other in and around the workplace has become less time consuming thanks to s, instant messaging, video conferencing there fore worker feels less stressed. However due to the pressure to response quickly has caused higher stressed levels, as people expect responses almost instantly Technologies in the workplace such as Adobe Captivate, Movie maker, moodle etc have seen the need to up skill staff to learn exactly how to best utilise each new program. As a result staff are excited to learn the new skills and programs in order to enhance job satisfaction and delivery. However, some people are not given the adequate training to best utilise such technology and are having trouble keeping up with the constantly changing technology causing stress levels to increase. This can also be time consuming and incur high costs if workers are not adequately skilled, causing a negative attitude towards technology in the workplace. Electronic communications and processing such as s, Internet banking/shopping have caused workers to feel socially isolated due to less face-to-face contact with other workers, consumers, employee/ers The introduction of computers in the workplace has lead to a lack of motivation of workers due to them not knowing how to operate them properly or that now the computer can replace the physical skill that was once required to get the job done, such as through the use of robotics.
