Concept 11! How are zoning laws and building codes used in the design and use of structures?

2 Please define: Building codes: Zoning laws:
A set of rules that state the minimum standards for things that are built. Zoning laws: Laws that govern (or say how) land can be used in a city or town.

3 What do zoning laws do? Zoning laws say what a structure or building can be used for in part of a city or town. They also define the characteristics of the building. For example, zoning laws can say how tall a building can be and how far it has to be from other buildings.

4 Two Examples These cities limit the height of their buildings:

5 Types of zones: (create a study guide!)
Residential Zones are used for housing. “residential” means home. Commercial Zones are any part of a city or town in which the primary land use is commercial activities. shops, offices, theaters, restaurants… “commercial” means a place to spend money!

6 Industrial Zones are areas where there are factories
Institutional Zones are areas for schools, shelters, hospitals, places of worship, and colleges/universities. Industrial Zones are areas where there are factories coal mining, steel, ceramics, electronics, clothing… Recreational Zones are areas of parks an preserved lands used for recreational activities.

7 Urban, suburban, rural… Urban: Suburban: Rural: A city or town.
A smaller community next to a city that is within commuting distance. Rural: The country (lots of land, few houses)

8 Urban Sprawl… The spread of a city and its suburbs into low density and often car-dependent development on rural land.

9 Urban Planning Urban planning
city and town planning how land is used in an urban environment or city neighborhood planning and mass transportation networks like the MBTA Urban Planning guides the orderly development and creation of towns and communities. Without Urban planning cities and town would be disorganized.
