Three Latest Technology In
Computer Science

1. Automatic Contingency Planning

Algorithm lets planning systems generate backup plans efficiently.
Planning algorithms are widely used in logistics and control. They can help schedule flights and bus routes, guide autonomous robots, and determine control policies for the power grid, among other things.

In recent years, planning algorithms have begun to factor in uncertainty — variations in travel time, erratic communication between autonomous robots, imperfect sensor data, and the like.

That causes the scale of the planning problem to grow exponentially, but researchers have found clever ways to solve it efficiently. Now, researchers at MIT and the Australian National University (ANU) have made the problem even more complex, by developing a planning algorithm that also generates contingency plans, should the initial plan prove too risky.

It also identifies the conditions — say, sensor readings or delays incurred — that should trigger a switch to a particular contingency plan. Despite the extra labor imposed by generating contingency plans, the algorithm still provides mathematical guarantees that its plans’ risk of failure falls below some threshold, which the user sets.

2. Smarter Driving, Using Your Phone

App that rates drivers’ behavior yields promising safety results on the road.
Mobile-based telematics — apps and hardware that measure driving behaviors — may be the future of safer roads. Increasingly, people are using these technologies to improve their own driving habits, while insurance companies use the data to offer rewards and discounts to safe drivers.

One of the most prominent companies — and one of the first — in this market is Cambridge Mobile Telematics (CMT). Co-founded in 2010 by MIT professors Hari Balakrishnan and Sam Madden, CMT develops incentive-based apps for safe driving that are being used worldwide, with aims of making drivers better and roads safer.

DriveWell, CMT’s flagship app, is based on years of MIT research and runs in the background on a smartphone, collecting data to detect road types, driving smoothness, speeding, phone distraction, and other factors.

Drivers receive a score on a scale from 1 to 100, along with route maps and tips for improvement. Scores can be used for insurance discounts and prizes while competing with friends and other drivers worldwide.

In South Africa, a version of the app has been used for a nationwide safe-driving contest, where tens of thousands of drivers competed for prizes. Results indicated that safe driving increased by more than 30 percent during the contest.

“Many people blame phones for causing accidents, but we are demonstrating the possibility of using smartphones to make driving safer,” says Balakrishnan, MIT’s Fujitsu Professor in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), around 1
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), around 1.25 million people worldwide die in traffic accidents annually, while somewhere between 20 and 50 million more suffer nonfatal injuries

The WHO also estimates that, without action, traffic accidents could become the seventh leading cause of death worldwide (moving from ninth) by 2030.

Over the years, CMT has collected promising data on the app’s effectiveness, and on driver safety in general. The startup has users in eight countries and is now partnered with a number of major insurance

companies and service providers, including Discovery Insure of South Africa, Desjardins Insurance of Canada, Hellas Direct of Greece, and Towers Watson.

The startup has also developed an optional hardware component, called the DriveWell tag, which attaches to a car’s windshield and augments smartphone data. The tag also provides real-time crash detection and roadside assistance.

the tag detects an accident, it transmits data to the phone, and then to CMT’s servers. An operator from a call center then contacts with the driver to provide assistance.

3. Software That Automatically Repairs The System Affected By Malware

Together with his colleagues, Martin Rinar, who is currently a professor of computer science at MIT, managed to create new software called ClearView that is able to identify the intrusion of alien software and generate a set of patches meant to repair the operating system.

The new invention detects the rule that was compromised and then generates patches that make the software to pursue the compromised rules.

Afterwards the software analyses all options in order to decide which of the chosen rules represents the most suitable patch. The team's new invention searches for particular types of errors, which are often caused by a malicious code introduced into the operating software.

A great advantage of the new invention is that it can be installed on several computers that run the same software. When it selects the most effective patch, the latter can be installed on all the other computers.

The team of researchers carried out a test of the software on a group of machines that run Firefox. A team of independent programmers launched an attack on Firefox, each using a different type of attack.

ClearView managed to block the malicious codes of all attacks
ClearView managed to block the malicious codes of all attacks. It also shut down the program prior to the attack.

The new invention discarded the wrong corrections and generated patches that corrected all errors caused by malware. Just after 5 minutes of the first attack ClearView managed to create a working patch.

“The Reason why I select these Three Latest Technologies”

1. Automatic Contingency Planning
This latest breakthrough is beneficial to the travel agencies to have more realistic control of their flights thus ensuring further safety to the passengers. This will also be used to adopt new policies that will improve planning of the flights.

2. Smarter Driving, Using Your Phone
I picked this technology because it has a noble purpose of providing a safety driving to the drivers. Car and vehicular collisions while in the roads are among the rampant cause of deaths and accidents among drivers. So this technology is of great help to the drivers as it will increase the chance of driving safely.

3. Software That Automatically Repairs the System Affected by Malware
Presently, lots of malicious codes and malware are destroying a system of a computer. These malwares compromised and put at risks the operating system of a computer. This technology would help detects the malware and the compromised files or system and then generates patches to recover the system from malwares.

Thank You for watching and Have A Nice Day!!!
