2 Engineering Typical Departments within Engineering Companies Marketing
Page 2 of 5 Typical Departments within Engineering Companies Marketing Sales Research & Development Design Manufacturing Assembly Test Delivery Maintenance Disposal Finance, Health & Safety and Environment, Human Resources, Logistics, Planning, Quality & Technical Services The Departments have been grouped here for simplicity. They may or may not be grouped like this in Companies especially those in the yellow box which generally are separate Departments but have been shown grouped here to show that they in particular provide support to all the other Departments.

3 Engineering Department information
Page 3 of 5 Department information Marketing The promotion of products or services the Company produces to help create sales Sales The selling of products or services the Company produces and formalisation of same into a contract. Research and Development The refinement of an idea or creation into a product or service through analysis and testing to ensure safe, reliable and does that expected (design definition). Design The formal defining of a product (including details of all sub parts) or service parameters into a design specification to then enable manufacture or delivery. Manufacturing The process of producing products (and sub parts) to the design specification. Assembly The process of putting sub parts together to produce larger sub parts or products. Test The process of testing sub parts or products to verify they meet the design specification.

4 Engineering Department information
Page 4 of 5 Department information Delivery The process of dispatching the product or service to the Customer and seeking and securing payment for same. Maintenance The process to assist if required the Customer supporting the product or service when in use, to ensure the expected performance is achieved in line with the sales contract. Disposal The removal from society of the product in an environmentally correct way. Finance The monetary controls employed to support Engineering activities with the aim of producing a profit. Health & Safety and Environment The processes , procedures and work ethics used to ensure all undertaken is done so safety for staff, surrounding people and the environment. Human Resources The process of ensuring staff members are hired, administered and trained to fulfil their responsibilities. Logistics The process of purchasing resource (material, people, equipment etc) and delivering finished product or service.

5 Engineering Department information
Page 5 of 5 Department information Planning The process of converting a design specification into a means whereby efficient manufacturing can take place, or The process of defining maintenance activities (with Design support) to ensure product integrity when in use. Quality The process to ensure all aspects of Engineering are consistently delivering that expected to meet the contact and Company objectives. Technical Services The process of supporting manufacturing and/or in service product use to ensure efficiency or for example, when issues arise that need a deviation to the design specification and/or maintenance requirements by acting as the link between various Engineering Departments, especially with Design.
