1 MERMAID Innovative multi-purpose offshore platforms: planning, Design and operation MERMAID

2 MERMAID MERMAID is one out of three winning proposals for the call:
The Ocean of Tomorrow FP7-OCEAN-2011, OCEAN : Multi-use offshore platforms MERMAID

3 MERMAID The project is entitled: ”Innovative Multi-purpose offshore platforms: planning, design and operation” – or ”MERMAID2 for short. The project is being carried out over 4 years. From beginning of 2012 to end of 2015 Total budget is 7.4 million Euro The EC contribution is 5.5 million Euro The project is comprised of 28 participants The Technical University of Denmark coordinates the project MERMAID

4 Focus on specific challenges
in the Baltic Sea, representing a typical estuarine area with fresh water from rivers and salt water from the North Sea; in the trans-boundary area of the North Sea-Wadden Sea, representing a typical active morphology site; in the Atlantic Ocean, representing a typical deep water site; in the Mediterranean Sea, representing a typical sheltered deep water site. MERMAID

5 Objectives 1/4 Management and development of novel innovative multiuse offshore platform: Develop effective procedures for stakeholder involvement Develop procedures to address variations in legislation and policies through EU Guidelines to make project development attractive to developers and investors MERMAID

6 Objectives 2/4 Innovative technology and design
Develop integrated concepts for extraction of renewable ocean energy Develop of offshore aquaculture technology and experience Guidelines for large scale platform design concepts Prepare guidelines for integration of technologies and services on MUP MERMAID

7 Objectives 3/4 Sustainable integration of multi-use offshore platforms
Integration with stakeholders, not for them, ensuring high level of social, economic and ecological acceptance of final designs. Assessment the socio-economic viability of MUP compared to single use Assessment of dynamic and Spatial Environmental and Ecological Sustainability of MUP Assessment of acceptable and affordable MUPs by the developing concepts for different social groups identified in the regions MERMAID

8 Objectives 4/4 Integration of management, technology, social-economics at four contrasting test sites Focus research in a manner suitable for immediate use. To provide real sites with real and specific problems against which tools, techniques and decision support systems may be applied, tested and validated. Use test sites to ensure that MERMAID deliverables are of real value, practicable and usable. MERMAID

14 Expected results Management planning and operation:
Mapping of challenges with legislation and impact assessment procedures in EU Methodology on effective stakeholder involvement in large complex projects Planning methodologies for offshore installation, operations and maintenance MERMAID

15 Expected results Numerical tools end innovative technology
Improved methodology for mesoscale modelling for met-ocean data analyses. Improved design of mooring systems for aquaculture and energy devices Conceptual and mathematical models of the interaction between Multi-use structures, seabed and environmental conditions. Detailed models of near-field spreading processes combined with chemical and biological processes, and the use of the knowledge in parameterized form in medium to large scale numerical models. MERMAID

16 Expected results Knowledge base of integration of management, technology and social-economics: The use of four sites will lead to a better understanding of specific technical, environmental, and socio-economic challenges on different sites in EU Design procedures for complex Multi-use offshore platform developments Development and use of Methodology for Integrated Socio-Economic Assessment (ISCA) MERMAID
